A private tclogiam received from G. F. Sherwood, Esq. (now in Wellington), mentions that the Amended Harbor Fill had been delayed, ponding information from Taranaki re endowments. The wishes of the public meeting regarding the establishment of a Land Board for Pa tea arc being attended to, and a Bill (now being prepared) will be submitted to the House on that important matter. This and Harbor business will probably necessitate .Mr Sherwood staying in Wellington longer than was at first expected. We are certainly far from satisfied with the telegraphic replies sent to Hr Croft, as answers to the resolution re removal of Survey Officer, maps, and records. The reply, contrasted with the resolution, looks evasive, and it would appear that the semblance only of a Land Office is intended to be retained, while all that is useful as a means of obtaining information and facilitating sales of land, and consequently the progress of the district —namely, the Survey Officer, original maps, and records—is intended to be removed. We think an endeavor should be made to get a more definite reply. If the action being taken by Mr Sherwood results in the establishment of a Land Board for Patoa, that will bo satisfactory. The reply telegrams arc far from being so, and, in the interests of the public, we think steps should be taken by public meeting or committee, to get a more definite answer. Mr Sherwood could also be got to press the matter on the attention of the Minister for Lauds, unless, indeed, there is reasonable hope of the proposed Bill to establish a Land Board being passed, in which case the other matter might be allowed to drop.
