A PURPOSE.
The ground of a man’s culture lies in his nature, not in his calling. His powers are to be unfolded on account of their inherent dignity, not their outward direction. He is to be educated, because he is a man, not because be is to make shoes, nails, or pins. Poems, and theology and philosophy, which have made some noise in the world, have been wrought at the workbench, and amidst the toils of the field. When the arms are mechanically plying a trade, the mind escapes to the ends of the earth ! Often does the pious heart of woman mingle great thoughts with household drudgery ! A man in earnest finds means, or if he cannot find, creates them. Without a vigorous purpose, the best men are worth little, and with the humblest become mighty.
