ATTENTION CALLED.

(To the Editor of the Patua Mail.)

Sm • —I beg to call the attention of tlie Carlyle people to-the proceedings of the Town Board, as represented in the Wanganui Chronicle.■ i On a motion for borrowing money, for.'the purpose of improving the town of Carlyle, Messrs Taphu-aud .Hirst stated that though .they were in favor of getting the money,' they would vote against it, because the Bill would be entrusted to the bands of Major Atkinson for presentation to Parliament, I am no supporter of that person, but of all the outrageous pieces

of petty personal spite ('which is so prevalent in Patea) I ever heard of, this is the worst! A man actually votes against what he publicly states he knows to be in the interest of the town, because he dislikes our.representative ! There is no doubt that the value of town sections would be greatly increased if the streets were made in such a way ‘that people would be induced to build, by having their lots made accessible to traffic—aiidj without even mentioning the great improvement to the appearance of the town, I affirm that the people are actually money-losers in the value of their property by this most extraordinary and spiteful vote. Is this what we elect men to represent us in the Town Board for ? Onr town is to remain in, its present unimproved state because (Yc Gods !) Major Atkinson is supposed to have slighted the ineffable dignity of a Taplin ! Neither Hirst nor Taplin would have had support of mine had I thought they would have voted against a motion that impressed itself as desirable, and almost necessary, even to minds dense as theirs.—l am,

&c., AN ELECTOR Patea, Bth July, 1878.
