CENSUS OF THE NATIVE POPULATION OF TARANAKI.

The following is the result of u census taken of the native population in the Taranaki County which has just been completed by Major Brown, the Civil Commissioner;— Over 15 years—males, 1,335; females, 1,147; total, 2,482. Under 15 years—males, 502 ; females, 456; total, 058. Totals—males, under and ovor 15 years, 1,837; females, 1,698; total, 3,440. The totals for- .1874 were—males, 1,561; females, 1,200; total, 2,761. According to the present census the population has apparently increased, but the Civil Commissioner says from his knowledge there has been a steady decrease since he has been in office. The disparity of the sexes imd the paucity of children (especially females) as compared with adults, aie most striking features in the present census.—Taranaki Herald.
