WAVERLEY.
(FROM our own correspondent.) June 5. The usual monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Tuesday, but the business done is scarcely worthy of remark, as the Board is to a great extent crippled by the Town Belt difficulty. People are beginning to grumble pretty considerably about it, as it was expected that, ere this, the reserve in question would have been: turned to account, and many are looking forward anxiously for the chance of getting leases of different parts of it. Of course, some of the growl is against the Board, but I must this time at least, stick up for the “ Powers that be.” I believe that they have done'all in’their power to forward the matter ; the Chairman has been most energetic in his communications with the
Government-on the subject; but with the exception of the first reply to the effect that “ the reserve in question would be banded over to the Local Body in due course,” nothing can be got out of them. The Belt has been surveyed at the expense of the Board, and cut up into sections varying from six to ten acres, and at both ends of the Town building allotments of i acre have been laid out, so that the authority of the Government to deal with it is all that is now wanted to bring in a considerable revenue, which could of course he well expended for the benefit of the Town. It was decided on Tuesday that the Board should wait on Mr Bryce on his arrival in the district and request him to urge the matter on the attention of the Government. It would bo a great pity if the land was not put to some use before the fencing season is over as there are many who would willingly go to work at once, and I believe a good price would be realized for the leases, whereas if the winter be allowed to pass without action being taken in the matter, it will involve loss of time and ergo of money. I trust that our Board will not lose heart but will do their best to forward the good work. I am sorry to have to confine myself to the one subject this time, but run-away horses, suicides, and twins are getting scarce tins year in Waverley.
