ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE

[Wb are at all times ready to give expression to every shade of opinion, but in no case do we hold ourshlves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.]

WHARF QUESTION. (To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)

Sib, —Being a constant reader of the Mail, I fail to see the consistency of your line of argument re wharves, Patea River. I quite agree with you in blaming any member of the Harbor Board, as a member of the Board, applying to Sir J. Goode on the subject of wharves or anything else in connection with the river ; but I hold the opinion that any member of the community has a perfect right to ask Sir J. Goode, or any other person, for an opinion upon any subject relating to the district. In your subleader of Saturday last, you say the plans of the wharves were laid before Sir J. Coode by the chairman. I will ask the following questions :—lst, Who sent for Sir J. Coode? 2nd. Who authorised Mr Sherwood to lay plans of wharves before Sir J. Coode ? 3rd. At what meeting of the Harbor Board was a resolution passed instructing the engineer or anyone else to propose to Sir J. Coode any particular site for the wharves ? I know nothing about the aforesaid plans, hut ray opinion is—the wharves should be on the Whenuakura. side of the river, but far enough down so as not to interfere with the bridge. There is deep water close to the bank ; all kinds of produce could be shipped direct from the drays ; live stock could be shipped with the least amount of risk and expense, which is a consideration, as I hope this will become a large exporting district. Hoping yon will find it convenient to insert this in Wednesday’s issue, and by adding a footnote, stating in what particular part of the district the writer resides, you will oblige.—l am, &c., CONSISTENCY. o WAVERLEY SCHOOL ELECTION. {To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)

Sir, —For ingratitude and inability to appreciate real worth, allow me to commend the Waverley people. Could it have been conceived, a short time since only, that so much ohluseness was to be foiled there, to have ignored such abilities and special gifts as-are held by the late chairman of the school committee for the duties there devolving.

Depend upon it that election in some manner was not correct, and I am as one with Mr 13. in the determination of unearthing such machinations there developing of late. The election will be annulled, and then, never fear but we will whip the crowd that will, in injustice, evenly distribute their votes. We shall see what really earnest plumping can do in a good cause. That part of the Education Act, I can now see, was framed for our special want. How blind we were. No need for doubting the result of the next endeavour, however. Yo rejected ones, you shall again preside and award more prizes, with an impartial hand, and emulation, the great charm, as an incentive to youthful exertion, shall receive no rode shock under thy nurturing care.—l am, &c., NEMESIS.
