Yesterday (Queen’s Birthday) was observed in Carlyle as a close holiday. Postoliice was closed, and Telegraph office opened Sunday hours.

On Thursday morning it was reported in Cariylo that a butcher named James Hargreaves, well-known throughout the district, had been drowned in the Patca River. Sergeant Whelan, on being - informed, made all possible inquires, and searched the river bank, along which wore found foot piints in one direction but no signs of the body, it appeal’s that Hargreaves left the Boiling Down Company’s Works, ’•ear the Heads, soon aft a* four p.m. on Wednesday. About 5.3d a.m. on Thursday, Daniel Ball, steward of the s.s. Clyde, which vessel was lying at Hirst’s wharf, heard someone calling out “ steward, steward,” the voice apparently coming from across the river. Air Ball turned out on deck, bat it was too dark to see far. While on deck he again heal'd cries of “ Oil ! oh," and sounds as of some one snuggling in the water. He immediately pulled off in the boat in the direction of cries for'help, but failed to discover anything. It is believed Hargreaves, attracted by the light on the steamer, bad stood on the opposite bank, and while calling for help bad rolled over into the river, or that be had attempted to swim across and so got drowned. The crew of the steamer, as soon as daylight appeared, searched both sides of the river to the Heads, but could find nothing of the body. As Hargreaves is nowhere to be found it is concluded he lias been drowned. Search is still being made for the body, Sergeant Whelan having dragged up and down the river. Letters on Scab Petition and Road Board contracts, in next issue. Table under the heading “ Railways Working Account,” published in the N.Z. Gazette, shows the total revenue and expenditure during the Financial year 187778, to the termination of the Pour-weekly period ending 6th April, to be—revenue, £403,583 2s Id ; expenditure, £299,237 8s 9d ; percentage of expenditure to revenue, 74.14. We have pleasure in acknowledging receipt of the May number of “ The New Zealand County Journal,” which is ■published by the committee of the Canterbury Agricultural ami Pastoral Association. It is a most valuable farmer’s friend, and is working itself into favor all over New Zealand. An article, “The Reclamation of lands devastated by shifting sands,” is of especial interest to occupiers of sea coastseclions. There is much information, useful alike to small settlers and large holders of land.

The Hawke’s Bay Herald, referring to what it terms (he “Te Amo Estate operation,” says —Tiie, property has been relet privately by the trustees of the Hev S Williams, at £IOOO per annum for the first seven years, an I £I,BOO for the next seven. As to conditions, the same paper says—“ Any one who had a fourteen gears’ lease of the land would make them without any stipulation. The long and short of the matter is, that while the Education Board can hardly find money to make both ends meet, and while the miserable pittances of the schoolmasters, in the smaller townships at any rate, will have to bo eked out lay the contributions of the residents, the reverend gentleman stands to clear an enormous fortune out of the educational, property-of the public. This was all very well in (he good old days—the days of the pumice stone and the clamp sponge—but we thought there was a prospect: of our seeing such transactions brought to a standstill now. The Government must surely take up the matter in the House. If they do.not, people in Hawke’s Bay will begin to think that their enthusiasm on behalf of public rights is mostly talk, ami that sterner, if less voluble gentlemen are wanted in their places.”
