MOUNT EGMONT.

[By a kinsman of Pat Dowling.] 0 ! what a happy time it was, On April’s eighteenth day, Some friends of ours conceived apian, A week to pass away. Three in number, you know well, Named Tennent, Weiss, and Horner — They tried to reach the mountain top, But got jammed in a corner. These jolly tourists started, With Mr Weiss as chief, Bight well supplied with horses— With cocoa, and with beef. They halted first at Normanby— The' Host at them did grin— He did not like the look of them, So he would not let them in. At last their wants were all supplied. Next morn their way did wend, Quite positive, they were all three, The mountain they’d ascend. Although they’d never been before, Their leader knew the way—- “ I’ll take you up,” says Mr Weiss : The others cried “hoo-rae !” The party camp’d out for the night ; The cold it was intense : One gave a recitation, Which the others thought immense : Another tried to sing a song — His shivering voice had fled : The other wished he was at home, Snug in his little bed. Next day, the gallant trio Up Egmont Mount did start, Declaring to each other, that On no account they’d part. “ Push on,” says Mr Tennent, “ To yonder snowy flakes.” “ Oh, no !” says Mr Horner, “ Let’s stop and cook the steaks.” “ Excelsior,” it was the cry— Of course, they could not stop, For they were singing all the way — “ We’ll die, or reach the top.” To climb the rugged mountain, They tried full half a day, When suddenly, they all exclaimed, “ By Jove, we’ve lost the way.”
