ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

tWs are at all times ready to give expression o every shade of opinion, but in no case do we hold ourselves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.] MAJOR ATKINSON’S PROMISE. (Zb the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir, —As you and a number of your readers are aware, Major Atkinson —at a meeting of constituents held in Carlyle, on the 15 th March last—promised to forward me a certain document in connection with the late agitation re the conduct of Sheep Inspector. Being of opinion that—although the promise was made to me individually, in consequence of my putting questions on the matter—the premise Was really made to the meeting, I consider it necessary, on my own behalf, to thus inform" the public that, up to the present time,- that promise remains unfulfilled. After allowing doubly sufficient time for communication to have reached me, I forwarded a reminder to the, Major, who, however,, has remained quiet on the subject. It is an old proverb, that the last straw breaks the carnal’s back; and I think such conduct as has been exhibited in this matter by the Member for Egmont—in so persistently shielding the conduct of a public servant from that examination which we, as a community, are fully entitled to demand—should be quite sufficient to show, even to his most devoted! admirers, that he is

entirely unfitted to be our representative. Although this matter , has hitherto been met by excuses, neglect, and unfulfilled promises, it is clearly the duty of sheepowuers hi this district not to let the matter rest until they have endeavoured by every legal means to bring it to a successful termination.—l am, &c. EDWIN k MORGAN. Kakararaea, April 18th, 1878.
