April 13, 1878. 270 Mil, F. 11. JACKSON’S FORTNIGHTLY. STOCK REPORT. Wanganui, April 11. The sales during the past fortnight have passed off better than I anticipated. The want of rain is now being felt, settlers complaining of shortness of feed. There is no doubt that if we do not get rain shortly, there will be a great scarcity of grass for winter use, which'will have the effect of reducing prices of store stock, and increasing the value of fat cattle on in the year. Up to the present no serious inconvenience hasbeenfelt, and prices have been maintained. Cattle. —At the Hawera Yards, on Friday, 256 head came forward. The pens that were passed in at the auction were afterwar-ls all placed at quotations. Store bullocks made £5 15s ; cows, £5 ; fat heifers. £6 ; steers, £4 ; yearlings to 18 months old, £3 12s 6d to £3 17s 6d ; a pen of well-bred cows, £B. At the St. Hill Street Yards, to-day, fat bullocks, £8 17s Gd to £9 ; store bullocks, £6 12s 6d ; steers, £4 7s 6d ; heifers, £4 ; 91 head being sold. Sheep. —At the sale to-day, 1,314 were penned. Four pens were turned out. The rest were placed, prices being —Fat ewes, from 7s 9d to 13s 9d ; ordinary breeding ewes, 8s ; Westinere full-mouthed ewes, 8-s 9d to 9s 3d ; maiden owes, 11s to li’s 9d. Imported Rams. —The Lincoln rams, although late for the season, commanded spirited bidding, and brought good prices. Two-tooth, pure-bred, from £8 to £ls 10s. The chief buyers were Messrs Lomax, Harrison, Bull, Flannery, Baker, and Campbell. r i heLeicesters did not find favour, and were passed in. Horses. —The Yards were overcrowded. I sold unbroken animals at fair prices, and any good hacks were well competed for. “ Weeds” and “ screws” were passed in unsold. Prices were—Good hacks, £lO 10s, £l3, £l4, and £ls ; inferior, £3 to £7. No draught animals offered. Exports.—loo cattle, 600 sheep.
