WHAT WAS SAID.
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sir, —When I was up jour way a short time ago, in looking over some old copies of the Patea Mail, I happened to glance over a letter from your Wanganui Correspondent, in which he made some remarks about the hearing of an assault case, in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, and as to a Wesleyan Minister being subpconed as a witness of character. Your correspondent was kind enough to amend the Wording of the minister’s evidence, but not for the better. Now, Mr Editor, I think if your correspondent hud made use of the witness’s own •words, instead of substituting his, the correspondent’s words, it would have been more to his credit, and, perhaps, to the credit of your paper. Why he should make use of words that were never spoken, is best known to himself. Ho makes the witness say that he did not admit “ Roughs and Radicals into his church”—words that were not used..
There is a great deal of difference between .Roughs and Radicals, and an acceptable member of a church, or even an unacceptable member. A man or a woman might be neither a Rough nor a Radical, and yet might be very far from being fit to be a mem her of the Church of Christ. By inserting the above in your paper you will much oblige vours, &c., A. C. CAMPBELL. Wanganui, April 5, 1878.
