WANGANUI.
: & (from our own correspondent.) March 28. We had a minor accident on the railway on Monday, by which the 10.15 train with the Wellington mails and passengers was delayed some little time. Where the town branch line connects with the bridge at Aram oho, there are points and a very sharp curve. I cannot hear whether it was too rapid travelling or imperfect action of the points—but, however, the engine ran off. No great damage was caused, though some of the passengers were considerable alarmed. I still dread from day to day the news of some terrible accident occurring either the Wangaehu or Matarawa inclines, where I am assured that the grades are actually steeper than stated on the level pegs—-that is, 1 in 35. If the engine should run off, then God help the passengers, for there will be a fearful mangling and maiming. The Aiexeudra Cavalry have just completed a most successful and enjoyable consecutive week’s drill in camp. These annual gatherings arc looked forward to with ever increasing zest, and are most effectual m maintaining the esprit de corps of this splendid body of mounted men. I never hear much of the Waverley Light Horse. Is that corps still together, or have the members other and more congenial occupations to attend to than drill. There is no new feature about the Yipan scare, as is called this claim to recover possession of the sections, referred to in my last. Some of the present occupiers arc seriously considering the advisability of yielding up peaceable possession, rather than incurring the heavy costs of defending the suit of ejectment. For one or two it will be a very hard case. You will have seen that a meeting has been called to arrange; the programme for the steeplechase, on the 24th May. I hope your district will be represented. I predict a successful meeting. Who do you think I saw here this week ? A man bearing a name which should carry him through the world. Mark Lemon, son of the immortal, erstwhile editor of Punch. He is in very straitened circumstances, poor fellow.
