POWDER TO THE NATIVES.

Sin,—l was in hopes, after the Ist of April, to have been enabled to shoot d few pigeons in ray bush ; but, greatly td my surprise; the Maoris have killed them all; or frightened them away, before the time for shooting is allowable; , The natives have ample powder; shot; and gnni), which have beeii supplied by the storekeepers in Carlyle; Now, Sir; I would like to ask you what the authorities are about in allowing them id sell without a proper license. Major Brown, I am informed; gave permits dated Ist April to the Licensing Officer, Carlyle, fbf the natives to get guns and ammunition oh that date, and not before; but it is actually a fact that the natives were supplied in tlie middle of March with powder, &c., ad lib. There is an opportunity for the Government to step in and investigate this matter. If they do not, I and others will report it.—l am, &c., . . SETTLER. Manutahi, April 1, 1878.
