PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held in the Council Chambers, Carlyle, yesterday. Present: Messrs Bridge (in the chair), Kells, Honeyfieid, Davidson, Kenah, and Dale. Minutes of last meeting and special meeting read and confirmed. Correspondence read.

Apologies for absence were announced from Mr Livingstone and Mr Sherwood. On the motion of Mr Davidson, seconded by Mr Dale, The clerk was instructed to thank Taranaki County Council for information as to Mountain Hoad.

On motion of Mr Kenah, seconded by Mr Kells, it was resolved, “That Mr Southcombe be informed that the Council do not feel justified in going to any expense in the matter of maintaining a public pound at Waitotara, but are willing to continue his appointment as poundkeeper, and allow him to keep the fees on the understanding that the pound is kept in proper order.” The Foreman of Work’s report was read, stating that the main line was in good order, and that bridge painting and gravelling contracts were completed. The piles of the Manawapou, Tongahoe, and Waingongoro bridges were reported to be showing signs of decay. According to instructions the Foreman had proceeded to the Mountain Road to take levels, &c. Tire services of Mr Aldzorf had been secured, but on account of his continued neglect the work had been delayed. Mr Wilson Hursthouse had since been secured, and the work would soon be resumed. A new survey line had been run through the bush at Normanby. It was suggested that slight repair's should be effected on road between Hawera and Normanby. Good gravel having been found at Mawhiwhiti on Maori land, it was recommended that Government should be asked to reserve a few acres of the ground. Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned at 2 p.m. On resuming, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Dale,- seconded by Mr Kenah, “ That the chairman confer with Major Brown on the subject of obtaining a piece of land as gravel reserve at Normanby.” It was agreed that tim'ber should be ordered for repairs of bridges* as suggested by the Foreman of Works.-. The Cou'ncil declined to interfere in the action of the Foreman of Works as to Mr Alzdorf.—Resolved that £3’ should Re paid for services rendered.

Proposed by Mr Keriah, seconded by Mr Davidson, and carried, “ That the Government be requested to’ vest in' the Council, for road purposes,- the six acre reserve at Manawapou, and tlie sixteen acre reserve at Waingongorq.” , Proposed by Mr Kenah, seconded by Mr Dale, and carried, “That the metalled portion of the Mountain Eoad from Hawera to the junction of the Ohangi Eoad be kept in l repair, and all expense fo‘r the same, charged to £3;000 vote for the' Mountain Eoad.”

The chairman read a telegram from Government stating that £3OOO for road purposes betWcfen Stoney. Eiver and Waitotara was mot at present available. Proposed by Mr Dale, seconded by Mr Davidson, and earned, “That Dr Warren be reappointed Surgeon to the Patea Hospital—three months notice on either

side to be given to terminate agreement* Kate of payment to be’ the same as last year.” . The Council went into committee to consider tenders—for bush falling ; Gibsori and Steer, £1 15s per .chain (accepted) • Harrison and Co., £2 7s 6d per chain, arid W. Aiknian, £l2O, were both declined-, being informally sent in. The report of the committee was adopted. Proposed by Mr Bridge*, seconded by Mr Honeyiield, and camedj That license to slaughter cattle' bo granted to Mr Nicholson, subject to any bye-laws of the Council regulating slaughterhouses to be hereafter made.” . The meeting then adjounjed;
