A gentleman in Carlyle has received intimation by private letter that there is every probability of the great harbour authority—Sir John Goode—examining the Patea River, as lie passes through on his way* to New Plymouth. Rinkers meet this evening at the office of Mr D. M. Harris.
We have received from J. G. Holdsworth, Esq., Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wellington, schedule of lands in various parts of the Wellington land district, which will be offered for sale by auction at Wellington on the 23rd April. The list comprises 606 sections extending from the Hutt to Eangilikei • and Wairarapa, embracing intermediate places, and including town and suburban sections. Plans may be seen at the Patea Land Office. Volunteer scrip may be exercised. The first meeting of the newly constituted Education Board will be held at Wanganui, on the 6th April.
At a special meeting of the Wsnganui County Council to consider the best means of opening the Taupo country to the port of Wanganui, it was decided to offer a bonus of £250 for the first and £SO for the second plan of the most practicable line of cart road from a point on the Wanganui River to a point on the south-western portion of the Karori plains. A Government grant of £SOO is available to assist the Council in this work.

■ A gentleman who visited Patea a short time ago, Charles Kiernan, dentist, is reported by Press Agency telegram to have dropped dead in a fit of appoplexy, at Nelson, on Tuesday night (26th instant). The ordinary meeting of the County Council will be held on Tuesday. Tenders for ■ bush falling on Mountain Eoad -will be received by.tbe Patea County Council up to 4 p.m. on Monday. Proclamation setting aside land in the Otoia-Opaku Block, for sale on deferred payments, has been gazetted. There are sixteen lots, ranging from 27 acres to 320 acres, totalling 3,135 acres. Applications will be received at the District Land Office, Carlyle, on the 13th April, where forms of application and other information may be obtained.
We have been requested to call attention to the fact that Mr Anthony Broadbent will re-open on Monday next, the premises lately occupied by him at Hawera. He has selected an entirely new stock of general drapery, and men’s clothing, and has determined to give Hawera friends the. benefit of his advantageous purchases. At meeting of the New Plymouth Harbour Board, on Monday last, correspondence was read to the effect that the Bank of New Zealand would agree either to purchase the Harbor loan, or make advances and act as agents. It was resolved to carry out the original agreement with the Bank, which was to purchase the loan.
We understand that Mr W.. Williams, Native Interpreter, lias been deputed to pay over to the Momahaki natives the amount of compensation which they agreed to accept on Saturday last. Payment will be made at Carlyle to-day.
Carlyle Banks will be closed on Monday, being the Anniversary day of the Ta.iapaki Provincial District. .
A general meeting of the Patea Football Club, for the election of officers, will be held this evening.
A deputation waited on Government in Wellington, on Wednesday last, to urge the advisability of the transit of overland mails between Wellington and Wanganui, as soon as the Foxton to Wanganui line was opened. It was pointed out that the whole distance could be accomplished in one day. Press Agency telegram of March 2.6>■ states that the. special reporter of the .Marlborough Express says that two other payable terraces have been opened up at the Wakamarina, between Deep Creek and The Forks. The prospect obtained at the previously reported terraces should be an ounce to each set of timber driven, not per tub. .
The Westport Borough Council has invited tenders for a loan of £6,000. for a terra of seven years, at seven per cent. As the Town Board meets next'week, it would be just as well if steps -were taken to clear out the drain running across Unthanks Road through Captain Wray’s property to the site of the lake. The lake itself has completely dried up. The drain being also dry,, it could be cleared out at comparatively trifling cost, and the healthiness of the town would be thereby improved.
Official returns of the result of the election of members for Patea Harbor Board, Hawera Riding, were not received by the Returning Officer at Carlyle by coach yesterday. From a private source we learn that the numbers were :--J. Gibson at Hawera, 63; Normanby, 21—total, 84. J. S. Greig, Hawera, 40 ; Normanby, 15total, 55.
The Rev J. Law.wiil hold, his farewell service in the Wesleyan Church, Carlyle, on Sunday evening at 7 p.in., aftor which a special collection will be made in aid of Sustentation Fund. . '
A meeting of the Native Land Court will be held at New Plymouth on 12th April. ■
The Taranaki Herald calls attention to three onions on view which'had been raised by MrW.Carrington on his farm at Tapuae. They are the size of Swede turnips, and weigh about three pounds. Messrs Thompson and McGuire, Hawera, are reported to have purchased 90 acres of land from Mr J. Robson, of the saw mills, at the rate of £l9 per acre. The land is known as Waller’s section, and was purchased by him a fevy years ago for £2 per acre. Mr Robson on becoming owner, gave somewhere about £9 per acre. -
Settlers who had their grain cut by Wood’s American Reaper and Binder, have been agreeably surprised to find that it can be threshed by machineiy, at the rate of three or four bags an hour faster than hand bound sheaves. The stuff is cut shorter is laid straighter, and is altogether better bound, and easier for working than hand bound' sheaves. Besides which a considerably greater weight per acre of grain is secured.
