A CHANGE.’
A capital Story is told by the medical correspondent of an English paper. Says he :—“’A patient of, mine, a middle-aged clergyman, was suffering from some slight symptoms of gout. I of v hot>whisky and s -water ey.ery day, in preference to physics of any kind; but my reverend friend, with upturned eyes, absolutely ; refused my' prescription, saying:—* No, no, doctor; I have all my- life preached against alcohol in any form. If that is the only remedy I must continue’ to suffer. .Besides,’ said he, ‘ if I rang, for hot water my servants would guess t its purpose.* ; Said I, ‘ You shave, ring for shaving water; mix your glass of ' medicinal iwhisky, .-and who will be the wiser but yourself ? 5 The parson at last .submitted ; we warmly shook hands and parted. In a few weeks’- time, luy carriage passing the clergyman’s door f reminded me of my clerical friend. I touched the bell, and the thin, careworn
face of the once robust housekeeper answered me. i Well,’ -said I, ‘ hpwß your master?’ .S.tark,/.statin’ mad, sir—mad as he can be.’. Mad !, ,how ! what, how mad ?’ ‘ Lor, sir, mad as he can bo; why he shaves himself about twenty times every day,’ was the.innocent reply.
