SPECIAL TELEGRAM.
NEW PLYMOUTH. March 5
The County Council yesterday passed a resolution that Messrs Humphries, Robinson and Skinner be requested to draw up a report as to the best route for the Mountain Hoad, and that report be forwarded to (Government and to the Patea County Corned. These gentlemen’s evidence, given before members, was to the effect that the existing route was the proper one to adhere to. The Chairman referred to article in the Mail as of an impertinent character with reference to him, and said he knew from experience that anything done outside Patea County would be resented by the Council.
At the Waste Lands Board Stephen Gilligau’s application for some land in front of his section on the Taranaki Road was agreed to, and will bo advertised in the M ait, —the upset price is £2 per acre. Letter from Mr Dale relative to load in Patoa West Road District was referred to Captain Wray. Mr Jones, who lias just come in from the Front, says that Manga (Rewi) has visited the settlers at Mokan, coming down the river from Waikato. He remained a few days at the Mokan Heads, and visited the Europeans daily, and took food in Mr Shove’s house. During his visit he expressed pleasure at seeing Europeans settled there on friendly terms, and said he would advise the Government to do whatever the landowners and settlers required to open up trade. Rewi has now returned to the Waikato, it is expected, to arrange for Tawhiao’s coming to the Waitara to meet Sir George Grey. This is the first instance of Rewi having visited Europeans on the West Coast since the commencement of the Waitara war. o
