PATEA EDUCATION BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board was held at the Secretary’s Office, Carlyle, on Thursday last. Present: Messrs Middleinas (in the chair), Milroy, Coutts, and Peacock. Correspondence read. On the motion of Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Coutts, Messrs Duffel 1 Brothers (Hawcra), and Holtbani and Warren (Carlyle), were allowed To each as payment for errors in tendering. Moved by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Coutts, and carried, “ That each of the school committees throughout the district be requested to have the fence around the various play grounds trimmed or otherwise repaired, where required, and forward such claims for labor to the Board not later than the 25th March next.”
Tire Secretary was requested to have Kakaramea School fittings completed as early as possible. Proposed by Mr Middlemas, seconded by Mr Peacock, and carried, “ That a circular letter be sent to each of the school committees advising them to forward to the Board, not later than the 25th March, an estimate of any work .required to be done, or buildings to be erected, or fittings to be made to schools, with any other necessary tilings that may be required, with the view of enabling the Board, as far as practicable, to carry out section 43 of the Education Act—such estimate to include airy expenses authorised np- to date.” Proposed by Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Middlemas, and carried, “That the salary of the assistant teacher at the Carlyle school, as recommended by the Inspector, be increased to T75 per annum, to date from Ist January, 1878.” Application from Mr Jackson to lease section 7, block 18, Carlyle, for 21 years, at 30s per annum was agreed to. Application l by Mr Beamish to have his lease at Hokoia transferred to Messrs Hearn and Kennedy, was held over till next meeting to enable secretary to ascertain what improvements had been made. On motion of Mr Milroy, seconded by Mr Coutts, it was resolved, “That in answer to Messrs Duffel 1 Brothers application for extension of time to complete the desks, &c., contracted for, they be informed that one-third of the desks are Urgently required by the 10th March, and the corm pletion of the whole work by the 23rd March, otherwise the full penalty will be enforced.”
Proposed by Hr Middlemas, seconded by Mr Milroy, and carried, *• That this Board will undertake to apportion the vote under section 2 of ‘ The Public Libraries Act, 1877,’ for the Provincial District of Taranaki, and that the secretary take the necessary steps in the matter,”
Proposed by Mr Miiroy, seconded by Mr Middletnas, and carried on division, “ That the Hawera sohool committee be requested to immediately call a special meeting for the purpose of recommending to the Board, from amongst the applications received, an assistant female teacher for their school, in terms of the 45th clause of the Education Act ; and that the secretary be empowered to carry out such recommendation on receiving the same.” Ayes—Middlemas; Miiroy,Peacock. Noes —Coutts.
The Inspecto'f of the Hawera school building was empowered to have the entrance to the school-room improved. —Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned to the 25th March.
