MAORIS TAKING- POSSESSION.
(To the Editor of the, Patea Mail.) Sir,—l am glad to see that the Wavcrley Correspondent for Wanganui Chronicle' has taken up a question which should be of great importance to the settlers of thisdistiict, and in which I am of opinion that too much apathy has been shown. I allude' to the reported intention of the Government to return the confiscated land to the' Maoris. Certain it is that such action would be most prejudicial to the interest of this district, and I am really astonished that more notice has not been taken in the' matter. The Maoris appear most confident that the land will be returned to them ; I understand have shown confidence by taking upon themselves to order the Government Surveyor off the land, on which he was at work, and that in no very polite terms. As the Hon Air Sheehan will probably, shortly be paying us a visit, I trust that the settlers will not allow the opportunity to slip, bnt will interview him on the subject, when, doubtless, he will give due consideration to any reasonable argument or suggestion thev may make.—l am, &c., PROGRESS.
