The following items arc taken from the Herald's report of mooting held on Monday the 21st instant ; The Chief Surveyor reports :—Although about 2,000 acres at Whakarnara, Patea District, lias been surveyed, I have delayed forwarding a plan, as it is found that there is some more available land adjoining, and now being surveyed, which should be included in the one sale. The survey of land for settlement c n the north side of the Patea River will be commenced this week, and that of the township of Stratford as soon as the fallen Limber is burnt. —T. Humphries.” —The Ranger was instructed to burn the hush at the township of Stratford when a favourable opportunity for so doing presented itself. An application was received from Messrs J. and T. Robson, proprietors of the Ketemarac Saw Mill, for a provisional license to occupy 200 acres of land in the Patea District, near the Waingongora River, for the purpose of felling and removing timber, as they wished to extend their operations and erect another mill at or near the site applied for. The application was made under section 90 of the Land Act.—After some conversation on the matter, Mr Robson (who was present) decided to alter his application, as under the clause in Appendix B of the Act.—The Board decided to request the Ranger to report on the value of the land, and description'and value of timber upon it. The following applications to purchase land were received and accepted :—Charles H. McCutchan, 36a. 3b. Ip., being allotments 97 and 100, Manganui District ; and Felix McGuire, 13a. 3b. 30p., being allotment 101, Manganui District.
The Canterbury Times, in remarking- on an article in the London Times, which had favourably reviewed the affairs of New Zealand, sa} r s—“ The Times not only is not alarmed at our declared intention to borrow more money at once, but it looks upon the proposed expenditure of a million and a half yearly of farther borrowed money for an indefinite period, as actually an advantage, and marks it as a subject for cordial approval. When the prospect of Colonial borrowing has no terrors for the leading journals, the credit of the Colony proposing to borrow must be very good in the money market. Such £ state of affairs is in the highest degree gratifying-. It is not too much to say that tire Colony owes it principally to the exertions of its energetic agent Sir Julius Vogel.:’
