AUCKLAND. January 18. A disastrous fire occurred at Newton,; which originated in the house of (shoemaker), who, with his family, rescued with difficulty. The lire rapidly extended to the Rising Sun Hotel and other buildings. Fourteen premises wholly or partially destroyed. News from Samoa reports natives still fighting. Fifty of the Government party have been killed. The rebels, however, are starving, and expected to surrender. Natives of the Friendly Group are veryinsolent to Europeans and stole the Rev Mr Baker’s boat at Tonga. Horses were stabbed and the house broken into. Application has been made for a Resident Consul. The house of Captain Bradley, an old resident at Ohia, has been burned. The remains of the unfortunate man were found in the ruins. The body was charred but it is evident the lire was in ended to conceal a diabolical crime. 'Hie arms and legswere broken and the skull hammered in.Bradley was an inoffensive man. The Rev Mr Watkins (missionary) has written to Gordon, of Fiji, for a man-of-war to investigate the matter.NEW PLYMOUTH. January 18.
