CARLYLE CEMETERY RESERVE.

Some time during last year complaints wore made ns to the neglected and disgraccfid condition of the Cemetery,through fence being broken, and pigs being allowed to run free over the graves. Mr Shenvood, as Chairman of the Town Board, communicated With Government* and obtained a promise that £SO should be set aside to be spent on the Cemetery Reserve. As the promi.-c had not been fulfilled, Mr Sherwood, on his lute visit to Wellington, again spoke and wrote on the subject* tbe result of which will bo seen in the following correspondence.= Government It nil dings, Weilingion, 20th December, 1877. Sir, — I beg respectfully to draw your attention to the subject of my letter of the ISth June last, re fencing of burialgrounds ; and to inform you that the rccpiest contained therein* lias not complied with, although tbe sum saiy was promised by Dr Pollen. Th matter has been inferred to the Carlyle Town Board, but they have declined to take action,- having no funds at their disposal. I beg to suggest, that as those who arc buried in the graveyards fell in the defence of the Colony, the responsibility of keeping the gTounds and fences in repair, should rest with the Government, and not with the local bodies. As chairman of the Carlyle Town Board, I am willing to undertake that the work shall be done in a proper manner, on condition that the Government provide the small funds required,I have,- &c.,

Native Minister has been pleased to authorise the expenditure of £SS upon this work. Mr Sheehan will fool obliged by your kindly undertaking the expenditure of this amount, and on the receipt of your reply, arrangements will ho made for placing the sum at your disposal. Sherwood, Esq.,- Chairman Harbour Board, Patea.Reply to the above letter, was scut by Mr Sherwood, on the 29th December,stating that ho would undertake the expenditure of the sum granted, and on his return to Patea, would cull foi tenders for the works referred to. :—o The request in the following leltw written by Mr Sherwood, while in Wellington, has been complied with # and was expected to be gazetted on Thursday, the 11th instant: — : Government Buildings, 29th December.Sir, — I have the honor to respectfully request that you will be good enough to advise His Excellency the Governor,to constitute the members of the Carlyle (Patea) Town Board Trustees of the Carlyle Cemetery in accordance with clause 2 of “ The Cemeteries Management Act, 1877.” I beg to state that the management of the Cemetery in qncstson has been vested in the Town Board for some time past, but under existing arrangements the Board has no power to make bye- | laws, and are consequently not in a I position to administer the trust m an efficient manner. The Governor may from time to time appoint so many trustees,not fewer than three in number, as he may think fit, to provide for the maintenance and care of any public cemetery, and every such appointment shall be published in the N.Z. Gazette, The trustees so appointed may exercise all the powers granted to them under this Act, notwithstanding that .the legal estate in any public cemetery may not be vested in them.
