KAKARAMEA SPORTS.

The sports held at the above township on New Year’s Day were well attended. Conveyances ran during- the day from Carlyle. A goad course was laid out on the township, within easy distance of Haywood’s Wharncliire Hotel. Members of the committee were at work from early in the morning clearing thistles, pegging oil the course, and so on. The sports commenced at twelve o’clock. A visitor (Copeland, from Wanganui) was the largest winner. Some local men who had never before competed in public showed up well. Mr Chadwick, and some others of the committee, who had been hard at work from daylight, and on whom the responsibility of carrying out the programme rested, were hardly in fit condition for competing. The sports, however, passed off well. The following is a list of events:— Maiden Race, 100 yards; 10 enterics. Won by— Wilson, A.C. Force, with Chadwick two yards behind. A good start was made, Wilson load ail the way, Chadwick trying hard to catch him. Boys race, 100 yards; G eateries. Jack (Maori), scratch; W. Dolamnrc, C. Delamoro, and Oormval, 4 yards; Paterson and Pearce, 3 yards. Won by C. Delamorc,W. Paterson being second. Quarter mile race. Out of seven enterics five accepted. J. Smith, scratch; R, gangster and Copeland, 10 yards, G. Nicholson, 12 yards; J. Adamson, 20 yards. Copeland won eas’d j - , G. Nicholson being second. Running long jump. W. iViiliains, 10 feet 0 inches, Ist; H. gangster, 10 foot 3 inches. 2nd. Throe others competed.

Vaulting with pole. Kitchen, Bft 2 in, Ist; G. Nicholson, Bft, 2nd. Two others competed. 100 yards handicap. G. Nicholson, scratch; T. Copeland, 2 yards; Chadwick and U. Sangster, 3 yards; A. Church !) yds. A good strut was made. Chadwick let! almost to the tape, which brought cries from the spectators “ Chadwick wins,” hut Nicholson put on a spurt and passed Chadwick close up to the tape, winning scarculy by 3 inches. All the others were well up. This was the best race of the day. Running high jump. Copeland, Ist—--5 feet; Sargoant and R. Sangster, 2nd—l feet 10 inches. Copeland could dear about 5 feet -1 inches. Mile handicap. Five came to the start ing point. T. Copeland, scratch; W.Sangster, A. Killoch, and H. Baers, 40 yards ; Lyttle, 80 yards. Lyttie led oil: as if he had only 100 yards to run, but baked and dropped out at the second round. Baers soon found the pace hot, and dropped out at third round. Sangster followed at the next lap. The race then lay between Killoch and Copeland. The latter ran with good judgment all through the race, passed Killoeh within 50 yards of home, and won by live yards. Killock ran wall, considering that ho had not trained, and it being the first race he ever ran. Hurdle race, 220 yards, 10 hurdles, 3 feet G inches high—This race brought out R. Songster, scratch ; T. Copeland, 7 yards ; J. Adamson, 8 yards ; G. Nicholson, 12 yards ;A. Sargeaut, 1G yards. Copeland and Adamson ran well throughout, the former passing the latter, two hurdles from home, and winning by about 10 yards. Adamson fell over the last hurdle, and walked in for second place. Standing high jump—Three entericsW. Williams, A. Sargeant, and M. Chadwick. All cleared 3 feet 10 inches, when Chadwick dropped out, leaving the others to tie at 4 foot. Tossing tho caber—Five enterics. Only two men succeeded in turning the caber, which was a heavy one. Sangster, threw furthest, with D. Hughes second. Handicap walking race, one mile —Four enterics. Only two accepted—Adamson, scratch ; Chadwick, 20 yards. Adamson caught Chadwick the second time round, when both kept together till half way round the last lap. Adamson then put on a spurt and won by five yards, Chadwick following up gamely. Three-legged race —Three enterics, but only two competed—Sangster and Williams, anti Copeland and Kitchen The result was a dead heat. Half mile race—Four enterics. Two came forward. R. Sangster, scratch ; W. Sangster, 20 yards. R. Sangster won by 3 yards. Consolation race, 200yards—Six enterics. J. Smith, scratch ; W. Giles and Brewer, 10 yards ; A Killoeh, 15 yards ; Clifford, 20 yards. Killoeh soon caught Clifford, and lead past tho winning post by 4 yards, beating Smith, (who bad passed the others) with some difficulty. The greasy pig did not show up, the committee having been so busy from daylight till noon, as to have bad no spare time to catch the animal. The sports altogether passed off well, and most of the visitors seemed well satisfied with the day’s enjoyment. There was not a single protest, which speaks well for the management.

HAWERA SPORTS. (from OT7R OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The sports held hero on New Year’s Day were undoubtedly the best ever witnessed in this Township, both hi the competition and the money value of the prizes, given, which could compare favorably with those of Townships three times the size; The attendance was large, and with fine weather, and everything clone that could be, to make the meeting pass ofE in a satisfactory manner, it is no wonder that the sports were a great success. The first race; the 100 yards,- brought four to the. post, of whom Mininix was most fancied. G. Bayly being second favorite. A good start was effected, Bayly leading until GO yards from homo, when Mininix rushed to the front, winning easy by about three yards. Tine, llscc. The hop, step, and jump was again won by Mininix, who cleared 39ft 2in.; Range, 2nd, with 38ft 11 in.; Broughton soon fell out. 440 yards race again brought four to the post. Russell started scratch, Dougherty 4 yards; Dawson 6 yards, W. Adamson 15 yards. Those positions were maintained the first round, but in the second Adamson dropped out, Russell running through and taking the lead. Dawson, however, caught him, and held the lead, until entering the straight, when Russell put on a spurt, winning easy. , Running long jump also fell a prize to Mininix—distance; 17ft Gin. ; Byrnes 2nd, 17 feet;

Mile race. This was the most excitingrace of the day. Dougherty, from his previous performance at Normanby, found many backers. Russell,- however, held the honor of being first favorite, and started at scratch. Dougherty and Corrigan had each 10 yards, and Dawson 30 yards. Dawson led the first four rounds, when ho dropped back, and Corrigan took up the running; which he led at a good pace Until the last round, when Russell, who had been lying last, rushed to the front. Dougherty; putting on a good spurt, t canght him about 80 yards from borne, and a splendid race then ensured between the pair, Russell winning at the finish by a few yards. Time, omin 22sso. Vaulting with pole. Mininix and Range tied, and divided at Bft 9in. Sack race. Rango, Ist; Corrigan, 2nd. 220 yards race. Byrne, 10 yards. Ist; Mininix, scratch,-2nd; Dawson, .0 yards,3rd. Running high jump, Mininix, Ist, sft.; Broughton, 2nd. The quarter mile hurdle race, brought out three competitors, Russell again starting at scratch, Dawson 10 yards, and Byrnes 25 Byrnes kept his lead throughout, taking all his jumps in fine stylo, and coming in an easy winner, with Russell 2nd, Dawson, 3rd. Tim quarter mile hurdle race for Maoris was won by Broughton. The three legged race was won Iq- Mininix and Rango, with Russell an ! C. Bayly 2nd, Broughton and llcrmione 3rd. The half mile race brought four to the start. Russell scratch, Dougherty 7 yards,Corrigan 10 yards, Dawson 12 yards.- Dawson kept the lead from the start; Corrigan throwing up the sponge at the second round. Russell put on a good spurt at the finish, but failed to quite overhaul Dawson, who won a good race; Dougherty, 3rd. Mile walking race, was won by Corrigan, who started at scratch, giving W. Adamson 50 yards. Corrigan walked in line stylo, and, with practice and training, it would lake a good one to beat him. One logged race. G. Bayly, Ist; F. Bayly, 2nd; Rango, disqualified. Tilting the ring. Sutton, Ist; Corrigan, 2nd. This concluded the programme, as the greasy pig failed to put in an appearance; and the company soon left for their respective homos, all apparently well satisfied with their day’s amusement.
