INDUCTION OF THE REV J. TORRY AT HAWERA.
The Presbytery of Wellington mot for a special emergency in the Presbyterian Church, at Hawera, on Wednesday last, the 24th instant, at 2.30 p.m., for the purpose of Inducting the Rev James Tony into the Pastoral Charge of Hawera and Patea, including Kakaramea andManutahi. The Rev R. J. Allsworth was voted to the Moderator’s chair pro tern., and at once constituted the Court in the usual way. He then called for the Edict which was returned duly certified, after which the Rev James Treadwell (Clerk pro tem.') went to the Church door, and with stentorian voice called three times upon objectors to the settlement of the Rev J. Tony (if any) “ now to appear and state their objections forthwith.” No objectors appearing, it was agreed to proceed With the induction. The Rev James Treadwell preached a very appropriate sermon, after which he put the usual questions to the Minister Elect, and these having been satisfactorily answered, Mr Tony received the righthand of fellowship and welcome from the members of the Presbytery present. The Rev R. J. Allsworth addressed the Minister on the duty and responsibility of his office. The Rev James Doull addressed the congregation on their duties to their Minister. At the close of the service, the Rev Mr Tony was conducted to the Church door, and received a cordial welcome from the congregation as they passed from the sacred edifice. In the evening a soiree was held in the Church. The tables were provided and presided over by Mrs Winks and othex* ladies who exerted themselves with right good-will. There was a very' excellent display on the tables, to which a large number sat down and did justice. After the tables were cleared and seats arranged, the Rev James Tony was introduced to the chair by the Rev James Treadwell. Interesting and suitable addressees were delivered by the Revs James Doull, J. Law (Wesleyan), R. J. Allsworth, and J. Treadwell. The speakers were frequently and warmly greeted. The addresses were alternated by some very effective sinking- of Sa.rrlcey ’s hymnsMrs Bayl j and Miss Goutts presided at the harmonium. Votes of thanks were unanimously passed to the ladies who provided the tea —the choir, the speakers—friends from other churches and visitors, and a most enjoyable and successful meeting was brought to a close by the Rev James Doull pronouncing the Benediction.
