Members of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge meet in the Carlyle Town Hall this evening. Mr F. R. Jackson will hold sale of pure bred stock at A. and P. show, Wanganui, on Friday. Mr Courtney’s cattle sale takes place at Glenavon (New Plymouth) to-morrow. Mr T. Haywood, propi’ietor of the Patca Brewery, informs the public by advertisement that the Brewery still keeps its reputation for sparkling ales. The Mountain .Road being now much used by travellers, it may be useful for them to know that Mr J. S. Dobbin’s Railwav Hotel, at Inglewood, is a new commodious and weli finished building, with ■jolly rooms, clyso to the Railway /Citation and is in good hands.
His -Honor Judge Kenny left New Plymouth by coach on Monday to attend the sitting of the W.anganui District Court, and passed through Carlyle yesterday. C. D. The Patea East Road Board met, on Monday at Carlyle, when the following tenders were accepted—Bush clearing Putahi Road, W. Watkins, at 6s per chain ; cleannc: and burning flax, &c., Ilukatcrc Roar], W. Prousc, £lO ; ploughing and forming Little Taranaki Road, S. Black and Co., 10s per chain. Full report iu next issue.
The County Council met at Carlyle yesterday. Report will appear in next issue. Notice of motion was given by Air Sherwood “That Councillor Bridge bo chairman for ensuing term.” The Banks at-Hawora and Carlyle will he closed on Friday next (Prince of Wales’s Birthday). Air Fortier, the well known coaching proprietor, has commenced running a coach through from Wanganui, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays, returning Alondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Albion Hotel, Carlyle, is the stopping and starting place.
Herbert Roberts, the Billiard Champion, is working In’s way up-.the coast from Wellington. "lie has been very successful in bis" play.
Thomas Middlomas, Esq., resigned his seat in the County Council on Alonday last. A new election will therefore take place, Air W. Cowern will hold important furniture sale at Waihi Camp to-morrow.
In response to communication from the Chairman of the Patea Harbor Board (Mr G. F. Sherwood) asking the present position of the 'Patea Harbor Bill Major Atkinson telegraphed from Wellington on Monday as follows —“ Bill read a second time. Passed the Waste Lands Committee. Awaiting committee of the whole.” As such progress has been made in the Upper House, there is every reason to believe the Bill will be got through safely, in spite of the narrow squeak it had in the Lower House, tluough the action of Air Ballanco in voting against it.
Dates have been fixed for holding the Wesleyan Bazaar at Carlyle. We hear that good progress is being made by the various committees in different parts of the district, Wavcrley is doing well, while at Hawera a good amount of work has been got ready. Alanutahi and Kakaramea are also aiding, as well as Carlyle. As the time is drawing near, the ladies forming the various committees feel the responsibility devolving upon them, and are" entering with enthusiasm on the work they have voluntarily laid themselves out for. The good will of the ladies is of itself sufficient to secure success.
The return match between the Alarried and Single members of the Patea Cricket Club, was played at Carlyle, ou Saturday last, ami attracted considerable attention. The Married men in their first innings scored 53 ; second innings, 90 —total, 143. The Single men scored first innings, S4 ; second innings, 81—total 115. The Married team thus proved best men by 28 runs. The highest scorer and only double figure in the first innings cf the Married was Tcnnent, 20; in the second innings Fraser made 32, and Dixon 11, all the rest made single figures. The Single men in their first innings made no double figures, in the second innings, F. T. Horner made 22, and B. Dasent 15, all the rest contenting themselves with single figures. Air Fraser was captain of the Alarried team, and Air F. T. Homer of the Single team. The next match of importance will be Tikorangi v. Patea Club. Both sides seem confident of victory, so it is not unlikely the match will be well contested.
On Friday evening last, a special general meeting of members of the Institute, was held at the Council Chambers, Carlyle, seventeen members being present. Dr Croft was voted to the chair, and read the requisition signed by sis members, by whoso authority the meeting had been called, and the advertisement convening the meeting’, in which it was stated that the business was to consider the matter of building upon the section of land owned by the Institute, and to discuss the action of the committee in removing the Institute to new premises.:—Minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.—After some discussion it was moved by Mr R. C, Tennent, seconded by Captain Wray, and carried, “ That the committee of the Institute be requested to have plans prepared fo. - a building to be erected on the Institute section to cost from £2OO to £250 ; and also take stops to ascertain if funds could be raised by way of mortgage on the same, and report to a general meeting of ths Institute, and that meanwhile premises now in occupation of the Institute be retained. —It was moved by Mr Milro}', and seconded by Mr McCarthy, That a subscription list bo at once opened, and a copy be kept at the present Library room, for the purpose of assisting in raising funds for building an Institute. - On the motion of Mr Keys, an amendment was put and carried as follows “ That a number of lists be made out and left with different persons for the purpose of raising funds to erect building for Institute. —The meeting adjourned. A subscription list now lies in the office of the secretary of the Carlyle Institute, for the purpose of obtaining funds to erect Institute premises. The list has been started by Mr J. Milroy with £2, and followed by Mr F. O’S. McCarthy with the same amount. The secretary will bo happy to receive subscriptions from all interested in the building movement. It is very desirable that more commodious premises should be provided. ’The premises at present used, though very convenient as regards position, in no other way meets the requirements of the chief town_ of a county, and we trust that efforts will be continued until a creditable building is erected and furnished.
The s.s. City of Sydney arrived in Auckland on Friday night, at nine o’clock, with the English mails via San Francisco. The Taranaki portion was expected at New Plymouth on Sunday, as the Wanaka left Manakau on Saturday morning. As the Patea portion did not arrive by the coach on Tuesday .it is probably the rough weather prevented the mails being landed at New Plymouth.
A letter from J. Bryce, Esq., AI.H.R.. to R. Hqrner, Esq., stating that dangerous illness of the former was reason information re scab petitions had not been forwarded earlier, has been received and shall appear next issue.
The Egmont Hotel, Hawera, was taken over yesterday, by Mr Owen, of Wellington. Air W. Dale, noted as valuator for Mr Duncan, and Air Walters for Air Owen. The hotel will be thoroughly renovated and refurnished immediately. Wo have been favored by C. D. Whitcombe, Esq., Civil Commissioner, Crown Lands. Taranaki, with plans and particulars of sections of land on the Ivloa Block and the township of Inglewood; remaining unsold, and for which application may be made by intending purchasers. Copies of conditions of sale with description of land and locality, have also been sent for distribution. Plans, &c., may be inspected at the office of the Patea Alail.
