REMITTED RENTS.

(To the Editor of the Patea Maii,.)

Sir, —Whnt a nice thing it must be to be a member of the Carlyle Town Board, and thereby be in a position to vote money into one’s own pocket, as was the case at last meeting. Holders of Town Board leases of course will be jubilant at having one year’s rent remitted. It will not matter to them that interested parties—who ought to have had better taste, and more respect for their standing as prominent townsmen, and indeed a better sense of justice, than to Have voted, on sncTi a question were the instruments of such an unjust and unheard of transaction. Of course it is very nice to be enabled, by simply voting in a particular way, on a particular question, to put pounds in the pocket. It is money gained, even if the process be not stricktly honorably. It is another feather in the nest to competency, “ Put money in thy purse.” Well, certainly some members of the Board have not been backward in doing so. Move shame to them. Though not at the meeting, I have been informed that Mr Williams did not want to vote, and would have left the meeting except for being strongly

pressed to record Ids vote. That showed at any rate that he had some right feeling, and was not specially anxious to fleece the general body of ratepayers. A few grasping speculators over-bought themselves, and have now bled lint general body of ratepayers into the bar-

gam. Ratepayer’s will learn from the voting regarding Town Board leases, who it is looks after the. loaves and hslies, and who desire to act fairly to the ratepayers. All honor to the minority.—l am, &c., A FLEECED RATEPAYER.
