[Reuter’s Telegrams to Press Agency.] BOMBAY. September 25. A Russian official despatch says that Mohemot Ali unsuccessfully attacked the Russians at Cherkoona, on the Jantva, on the 21st. He readied the entrenchments, hut was compelled to fall back, his supports failing. A Turkish official despatch says that a convoy numbering 5,000 entered Plevna. The detectives have been committed for trial re the turt swindle. 750,000 models in the American Patent Office have been burnt. LONDON. September 22. The Brindisi mail was delivered yesterday. lie the Avalanche disaster, a coroner’s inquest on five bodies is proceeding. Upwards of 3,000 bales of wool were offered to-day. Closing sales improved. Prices increased in firmness Opening rates recovered. 40,000 bales catalogued, and 20,000* withdrawn. Wheat shows an upward tendency. Australian, 67s to 60s ; New Zealand, 5Gs.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS. [per wakatipu.] SYDNEY. September 22. Inquiry into the charge against G. W. Faithful!, of attempting to assassinate H. C. Russell, Government Astronomer, has concluded. The accused was committed for trial. MELBOURNE. September 21. The ship Ambassador, from New York, had a disastrous passage. On June 16th, she was struck by a terrific sea, causing great destruction, with loss of the captain, second officer, and three of the crew, who were washed overboard and drowned. The vessel put into the Cape to refit. Portions of wreckage have been seen near Apollo Bay. It is said that two men were seen clinging to a spar 50 feet long. The steamer Pharos has been sent out to search. F. Lee, publisher of the Police Gazette, lias been acquitted of the charge of libel
Ten thousand bushels of malt was sold at 10s. The captain of the Macduff is to be proceeded against for running down a smack. ADELAIDE. September 21. Government is arranging with the Orient Line of Steamers to bring out ?, limited number of immigrants. Ten thousand bushels of wheat sold at 6s 3d ; seven bags New Zealand at 4s 0d ( delivered in Adelaide. Eleven hundred immigrants are now on the road from England. The Burra Mine has been closed on account of the low price of copper, QUEENSLAND. September 22. The whole of West Moreton is as barren of vegetation as if wasted by a Simoon. Cattle lie dead in hundreds' along all the water courses.
