The Russians have completely invested Plevna by lines and intrenchmonts. The Russian losses are numerous. Sulieman Pasha has silenced the Russian batteries, and ' now holds theTrayan road. The Russian army, after sanguinary engagements, has wholly "withdrawn to the west of J unt i a. Ardahau is evacuated. September IG. A Russian official despatch says the Turks unsuccessfully attacked Grivitza. There was heavy cannonading on the fifteenth at Plevna. During the late bombardment the Russian loss was four hundred officers and three thousand men killed. Total killed : and "wounded twelve thousand. The Roumanians lost throe hundred. A Turkish official despatch of the eleventh instant, says that the Russians evacuated Tirnova to reinforce Biela. Sulieman Pasha reports on the loth, that a destructive cannonade opened on the Russian position at Trojan continues. Mehemet Ali on the 15th defeated the Twelfth Russian Corps with great loss and pursued them to Banikaloin, Baker with cavalry is operating sue- 1 cessfully. September 19.
A Turkish official despatch says that the Nicholas redoubt at Plevna was abandoned from motives of strategy and that the Russian assault was repulsed with enormous loss. Rumours of proposed armistice and mediation are semi-officially denied. SYDNEY. September 21. Special message to the Ilerald Sept. 15: The Russians made a general assault upon the Turkish position at Plevna, on Tuesday, the Czar's fete day. Storming columns attacked the northern and southern faces of the great Gravitza Redoubt. Three divisions attempted to take the Turkish trenches protecting Plevna, whilst General Skobeloif operated against the redoubts barring the entrance to Plevna by the Sophia Road. The stormers everywhere advanced gallantly, but having no shelter, withered away under the deadly rifle filing from the Turks. The survivors were compelled to retire. Reinforcements shared the same fate, meeting failure and disaster everywhere. The Emperor returned to the head quarters at Posediu disappointed. During twilight the assault was renewed, and within an'hour the Gravitza redoubt, arid three other redoubts on the Sophia road j were in possesions of the Russians.
On Wednesday the Turks made six fierce attacks upon the Russian left. In the last they,recaptured three redoubts. • Reinforcement reached General Skobcloff too late. Gravitza ia still held by the Russians. The carnage on Tuesday and Wednesday was tremendous, llegularaiego operations commenced. .-A. rear attaclc t>y Meliemit Ali and Sulieman Pasha was feared. The Russian Imperial Guard is expected at Plevna in a fortnight.
