[Reuter’s Telegrams to Press Agexcv.] —o LONDON. September 12. The following are the names of the Colonists lost in the Avalanche :—To Wellington—Mrs and Miss Cooper, Cecil Walyer, J. C. Cooper, Neil Pearce (eldest son of Edward Pearce'S. To Wanganui—Henry Wilkins and
family, Miss ST. .Watt, Miss Taylor. Mrs Shield, Mrs Wychodel, J. -M. Richards, Miss Foote. —(Signed) Julius Vogel. Later. On Tuesday night, the ship Avalanche, bound for Wellington, when off Portland, was struck amidships by the American ship Forest, and sunk in three minutes. Sixty-three passengers, chiefly returning colonists, were all drowned. Of 34 seamen, three were. saved, including the third officer of the crew. Out of twenty-one of the crew of the Forest nine were saved. The bodies are bring washed ashore. Among the, list ol whole families are eight Wilkins’, six Lees’, and four Chamberlain’s. BOMBAY. September 12. The Emperor of.Austria at a banquet, proposed the healih ot his dear friend and ally, the Emperor of Russia. Gambetta has been sentenced to 3 months’ imprisonment, and fined 2,000 franco. September 13. Plevna is closely invested, The Turkish sorties were repulsed. The Russia-Roumanian forces are estimated at 80,000, with 350 guns. The Turkish number GO,OOO, with 230 gnus. A new bridge has been constructed at Nicopolis. Gambetta appeals. WELLINGTON. September 18, The following telegram, as to events in Europe, lias been received from the Agent-General; LONDON. September 14. After four days cannonade the Levusin Redoubt, before Plevna, was taken by the Russians. There was heavy slaughter. Five thousand Russians were wounded. The number killed is not yet estimated.
Plevna is still held by the Turks, and Snlieman Pasha is advancing on Gahrova. The Czarewitoh army has been driven back on Bicla by Mehumit Ali. The Independence of Itonmania has been proclaimed by Prince diaries, whoso, forces, commanded by him, behaved with groat gallantry before Plevna, fSiickseh Ims been taken by Montenegrins, with a battery of guns and war material. On the Czar’s birthday the Austrian Emperor drank the health of his dear friend the Czar. T1 ie Turks kill almost all prisoners. People in the valley near Plevna thrash their corn in the open, with shells living over their heads.
