That the Harbor Board should ha formed in the following manner, viz.— General Government nominate one, one elected by eacli Riding', the County Chairman, .and two from the Carlyle Town Board. Is there really no one in the Township of Carlyle competent to sit on the Harbor Board excepting members of the Town Board ? '2nd. Why Carlyle Town Board should semi two members, ami the Town Boards of Hawera and VV avoriey should scud none ? 3rd. Why the Chairman of the County Council should necessarily be a member of the Harbor Board ? 4th. If it is not quite possible for a. person to be willing to give his time as Chairman of the County Council, bat nob to he farther taxed to sit on the Harbor Board ? sth, Whether it was basis of population, ai-ca, or money value at stake, that suggested the representation of the Harbor Board 2 As these questions’ are not addressed to that august individual, “ the Chairman,” I hope yon will consider them, civil enough to elicit a reply without adding a foot-note. —X am, &c., enquirer.
H ANVER A INSTITUTE. (TO TIIK KLiTOlt OF THE PATKA MAIL.) Sirt } —I remarked in a letter which lately appeared in your paper, an attack on Mr MiddkmaSj one ol the counts of which was that ho had dared to propose a rote of .-£2b for the Hawcra Institute. The extent to which mean ancl petty jealousy can be carried between two sister settlements seems almost incredible, and augurs' extreme smallness of mind in those who cultivate the sentiment. Of all the tax levied by tne County Connell on Hawcra, notsingle piece of work which can benefit ns is being done in velum Cor our money ; and considering that not long* ago tnc Carlyle people received a large grant Sor their library, surely wo cannot ho supposed presumptions it wo, too, ask. assistance tor so good an object, lk
would hare shown a more magnanimous spirit in the Council had they considered our request in more generous terms; b't I should certainly think that any independant man (even in Carlyle) can scarcely defend them. It is a splendid instance of the tyranny of majorities, and if the Carlyle people are not ashamed of it, we, at least, give Mr Middlomas credit and sympathy for doing Ins dniy in the face of that illitcraic “stupidity against which the very gods fiaht powerless.”—l am, &c., WILD CAT. llawcra, September 13, 1877.
