GLEANINGS FROM STATISTICS. Statistics lately presented to the Assembly give the total estimated population of New Zealand, on the 31st December, IS7G (exclusive of Maoris) — Males, 225,530; females, 173,405: total, 399,075. The net increase in 1876 ■was Mai s. 12,286; females, 10,933: total, 23,219. The total Maori population on Ist June, 1874, was returned as 45,470. The number of immigrants introduced to the colony in 1876, at Government cost, was 9,677, of which number Taranaki received 247. The total number of persons who arrived in the colony was 18,414, of whom 11,132 were from tlie United Kingdom, The departures totalled 6,459, of whom 1,110 left for the United Kingdom. The total immigration in excess of emigration was 11,955. During the year !12 Chinese arrived, and 453 left the colony. During 1876, the number of persons in the colony who procured certificates of naturalization, was 150. There were registered in the Provincial district of Taranaki during 1876 births, 485 ; marriages, 77 ; deaths, 91. The percentage to every thousand of the population being—Births, 54.GG ; marriages, 9.68; deaths, 11.44. The excess of fcirths over deaths, 344. The population was Males, 4,532 ; females, 3,726 : total, 8,258.
