{To the' Editor of (he Pati:a M-\m.) 8m —The topic of the week is the election of a member for the County Council. Messrs Davidson and Moore Hunter have been nominated. Mr Davidson is well known in llawera politics, having - been one of our leaders from the early days of the settlement. He has some go in him. and 1 doubt not would he a useful acquisition to the Council. Moreover, 1 understand he has made such arranceinenls in his business, that he will always he at his post at cadi silting of the Conned lie has the credit of looking' out for Xo. 1, and in doing so cannot fail to bondlt his fellow sett tors, as no inis a very iargo interest in the town and riding, and is the stamp of man who will help to ke<‘p up the present good name of the Council. In seeking for men to place in positions of honor, it is of the first moment, that, such men he chosen from the ranks ot those who have worked for the public in past times, when, with the stimulant, of public gratitude, there will be no fear in the future. It is a risky thing to choose a man whose whole energies are centred in self ; and it were foolish to expect such an one to work with a will for the public. The process of evolution is too sudden to be lasting.
