All the principal mercantile men of the place are warmly interesting themselves in the undertaking, and it is stated that all the shares could be taken up in Wellington alone. PORT CHALMERS. July 13. A man named Thomas CangsWne, while in a state of temporary insanity through drink, cut bis throat with a razor. Dr Drysdale sewed up the wound, which was two ami a-half indies long and half an inch deep. The windpipe was cut through but not the arteries. He was sent to the hospital and is expected to recover. TIMARU. July 12. Mr Stafford addressed itis constituents last night. A full report occupies six columns. Referring to the proceedings of last session he said he did not think the waste of time would be repeated tin's session. Separation he strongly opposed, and if the question was brought up next session he anticipated an overwhelming majority against it. Regarding tqe county system, he said power could be placed in the bauds of the whole of the people in the colon}’ to say whether they should have a county system or not. lie strongly advocated that means of locomotion from one end of the colony to the other should be provided, and that the land fund should be made to contribute as well as the consolidated fund. That was the proper source to bear the burden. He consider, too, that a fictitious laud fund had been created that had to be supported by treasury bills, and was in fact an absolute sham. He referred to the great mismanagement exhibited in the construction of our railways. A great deal of the speech was merely of local interest. An unanimous vote of confidence was passed. CHRISTCHURCH. July 13. Over 50,000 shares have been applied for in Union Fire and Marine Insurance Co.
A meeting of farmers in the country have passed resolutions condemning the new raihvaj’ tariff. Grain and produce quotations—best milling wheat, 7s to 7s 3d; second quality, 5s to 6s 6d; flour, £l7 to £18; bran, 4s lOd ; sharps. 5s lOd; potatoes, £3; cheese, 7d; oats, 3s 9d to 4s. Millers have advanced oatmeal £2, 251b. bags now quoted £2O at auction ; oats realized 4s to 4s 3d at country stalions. Stocks low.
WAIROA HIGHWAY BOARD. Tun usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday, 7th instant. Present Wardens Bridge (Chairman), Lnpton, lon, Fleming, and LcLean. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Treasurer’s balance, £253 11s 2d. Letter from Minister of Public Works for detailed report of receipts and expenditure tor the year ending March 31st, 1877. The Chairman reported the report had been sent. Letter from J. Nicholson, requesting the Board to clean out water tables on the road leading to bis land, and to remove native fences encroaching on the road. Resolved : “ That the obstructions be removed as soon as possible, and the repairs attended to.” J. Riddle applied to have a cutting made to the Karat aid stream, and the bridge across the stream raised. Resolved: “That Mr lon prepare specifications for the necessary work by the next meeting of the Board.” Letter from T. Harris, requesting the Board to make a bridle track through the Kobi from his land, through Mr Thomas’, and offering to subscribe £lO towards the expense of making. Resolved: “That Mr McLean go over the proposed track, and report to the Board at the next meeting.” R. Johnston applied for leave to put a gate across the road near Mr McDonald’s house.—l. McLean for the same, on the road between Ills land and Mr Kenah’s. Both applications to be considered at next meeting. Letter from R. Johnstone, calling the attention of the Board to the impassable state of the road to the Wairoa Creek. Resolved: “That Messrs Lnpton and Fleming prepare specifications, and that tenders bo invited by the next meeting for the necessary work.” Letter from Messrs Fraser and Tregear, stating the terms upon which they will give their services to the Board. Resolved ; “ 'that their offer bo accepted, subject to the condition that the per centage will be only on works done under their engineering.” Memorial from A. Milne, and others, requesting that a more direct road be laid oif to the Okotukn hush, from Waverley, and suggesting a line through Messrs Hawes’ and Mr W. Milne’s laud. Resolved : “ That consideration of the memorial be deferred until the next meeting.” Memorial from A. Milne and others, requesting that a separate rate be imposed to lie expended on the above road. Letter from A. Milne, asking for a deviation on the Okotnkn road. Resolved : “That the Chairman inspect the road, and. if desirable, to make an alteration, and take the necessary steps to legalise the deviation. ’’
Mr Fleming was requested to have tlie road on the West side of sec. 34J ploughed and levelled, and the cutting's repaired. Tenders for hush clearing were received as follows, and declined : J. PATEA WEST HOAD BOARD. A .meioting of the above Board was held at the office of the Secretary (Mr William Dale), Carlyle, on Wednesday, the 11th instant. Present: Messrs E. R. Morgan, E. J. Morgan, A. Hinder, E. M. Honyfield, P. Wilson, and Ilk Bahnforth. Mr E. R. Morgan was voted to the chair The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Proposed by Mr Hunter, seconded by Mr Wilson, and carried, “ That Messrs Fraser andTregcar be appointed Engineers to the Board, on terms mentioned by them in letter of the 23rd June, 1877.” Proposed by Mr E. R. Morgan, seconded by Mr Hunter, and carried, “That action be taken under ‘The Public Works Act, 187G,’ to deviate the lower portion of Kakaramea Road, through Mr Fairweather’s land, and that Messrs Honyfield and Bahnforth point out the proposed deviation to the surveyors.” Proposed by Mr Hunter, seconded by Bahnforth, and carried, “ That the Secretary write to Mr Burrett, with reference to the Rate Book, and requesting a reduction to be made in consequence of the amount charged being considerably over the estimate given by his traveller.” Proposed by Mr E. J. Morgan, seconded by Mr Hunter, and carried, “That lire time allowed for the committee to report on works required on Ball Road, be extended till next meeting, and the same committee be empowered to arrange about trees referred to by Mr GL A. Marchant, iu letter of this day’s date." Resolved, “That the proposed rules for the conduct of business stand over till next meeting.” Proposed by Mr Honyfield, seconded by Mr E. J. Morgan, and carried, “ That notice be given that a rate of ninepence in the £ will be struck on all rateable property within the district, and that the rate shall be due and payable at the office of the Board, Carlyle, oil 3rd September, 1877.” Proposed by Mr E. R. Morgan, seconded by Mr Wilson, and carried, “ That the Board take over from the committee the question of payment for work on Gane Road.”
Proposed by Mr Honyfield, seconded by Mr E. J. Morgan, and carried, “That the Boa’-d offer Messrs Gane and Fairweather the sum of £l2 10s for work done on Gane Road.”
Proposed by Mr Honyfield, seconded by Mr Hunter, and carried, u That the Sccro-
tary write to the Minister of Public Worics requesting that action be taken by the Government to settle dispute between this Board and the Patea County Council, re junction of Spence and Main Road in this district.” Proposed bj” Mr Honyfiehl, seconded by Mr Hunter, and carried, ‘‘ That should any two members of the Board deem it advisable to expend any sum not exceeding £2 between meetings of the Board, in repairing roads, &c., they be allowed lull power to do so.” Proposed by Mr Balmforth, seconded by Mr Honyfiehl, and carried, ‘‘That for the future the Board meetings bo held at two o’clock on the second Monday in each month.” Accounts passed for payment —G. A. Marchant, £2 ; Fraser and ‘Tregear, 15s ; Patea Mail, £2 Bs. The meeting then adjourned.
