RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Friday, June 28, 1877. (Before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M.) Wandering Cattle. —Constable Sbiels v. William Williams. The constable deposed, that, when on duty on Thursday, the 21st instant, about ten o’clock in the morning’, he saw a coloured cow wandering about on the Taranaki Road, in front of the Town Hall, and from inquiries made discovered that the owner was Mr Williams. He had previousl}', moie than once, warned the defendant to keep his cattle from wandering about the streets. He also stated that the same cow was still at large, and that it gave the police much trouble.—The defendant promised to keep the cow off the roads in future, and said he thought the police specially picked on him in this instance, as from fifteen to twenty head of cattle might be seen prowling about the town every day. His cow had been running along with Major Turner’s cattle, but apparently got cut out from them.—The Resident Magistrate remarked, that, if Mr Williams considered the police remiss in the execution of thenduty, he should prefer a them. He understood that the police only impounded cattle found wandering on the streets, or else took proceedings against the owners. Complaints had several times been made by the Town Board as to cattle straying about the streets and damaging the footpaths. The Resident Magistrate thought as Mr Williams was a member of the Town Board, he had not set a good example. He would only inflict the nominal fine of 2s 6d and costs, amounting in all to 9s.
