It will be recollected that some time ago a Circular Letter was forwarded by the Colonial Secretary (Dr Pollen), to the Chairmen of County Councils in all parts of the Colony, asking that suggestions might be forwarded with a view to their being embodied in a proposed Amended Counties Act. Meetings of County Councils are reported to have been held, and in many cases, the wishes of the Colonial Secretary have been complied with suggestions for the Amendment of the Counties Act have been agreed to and forwarded. The Patca County has added its mite. At the last meeting after ordinary business bad been transacted, a committee of the whole Council was formed, when amongst a number of proposed amendments, the following were agreed to :

“ That the valuation bo made every five years. “ That section 65 of “ The Rating Act, 1876,” should be amended so ns to impose the duty of valuation on the County Council, in counties where the whole Act is in force, and not as at present on the Road Boards. That the Road Boards be called upon to pay half the expense of such valuation. “ That the Chairman of the County Council be empowered to send a verified statement of amount of nil general rates actually received by the different Road Boards during the said year.—Section 32, snb-section 2, Financial Arrangements Act.

“ That section 76, of tho “Counties Act” should be amended so ns to allow tho Council when in committee to sit with hlncoil.<lnoi'R,

“ That sub-section 4, of section 177, “ Counties Act,” should be amended so us to do away with the necessity of publishing bye-laws verbatim. “ That the County Council be empowered to make bye-laws relative to the weight that can be carried on vehicles of two or four wheels, similar to provisions of sections 84, Highway Act, Wellington, 1874.

“ That the County Council be empowered to license all carriers and vehicles plying for hire within the County, Vehicles carrying H.M. mails to bo exempted, “That section 59, “ Counties Act” should be altered so as to admit of more than nine members being elected to each Comity. 11 That a majority of the Council shall determine what shall bo deemed extraordinary business, and not the Chairman as provided by section 77, of “ The Counties Act, 1877.”
