British mails, via Suez, close at the Post Office, Patea, on Saturday, the 2Gth inst. ; via San Francisco, on Friday, Ist Juno. Messrs J. Strachan Greig and Co. will hold a large general sale to-day, at Hawera. Messrs Inman & Co., of Hawera, will offer for sale by auction, on Tuesday next the rights of the Race-course for the proposed meeting at the end of the month. F. E. Hickson, Esq., Sheep-Inspector from the Rangitikei district, whose appointment to Patea County was notified, has arrived for the purpose of thoroughly examining all the flocks of sheep in the district. The report will be anxiously looked for. During the past few days, frightfully rough weather has boon experienced in the district. On Wednesday evening, between five and six o’clock, a terrific hail-storm passed over Carlyle. Fences about town have been bent and blown down. At one time it was thought the roof of the Government magazine, near the County Council buildings, would have been blown off, the corrugated iron at one corner having got loose. The agency business formerly conducted by Mr W. H. Inman, of Hawera, has been taken over by the firm of Inman & Co., and will be carried on in connection with the auctioneering business, as may be seen by new advertisement. Constable Teague, who has for some past been stationed at Manutahi, is about to be removed to New Plymouth, having been appointed to a clerkship in connection with the Court House, New Plymouth. A newspaper man —one of our staffmight have been seen on Thursday last on some town sections between Lawyer Adams’ office and the Town Hall, lovingly embracing a galloping steed. But a moment before he might have been seen on the top of the horse.. We shall have to supply him with a balancing pole. In his hurry to catch the coach, he appears to have put the bridle on wrong way about, and in consequence of the bit slipping, was unable to steer the animal. He got jerked off. The ground was soft. On lifting himself from mother earth to the top of the horse again, the saddle was seen to slip round. He had not tightened the girths. Putting his arms around the horse’s neck, the’ newspaper man for a second or so disappeared from view, but re-appeared hanging in front of the then galloping steed. Our managing man turned out, regained the horse, asd fixed the nder. The latter wasn’t drunk—he’s almost a teetotaler, but he does not seem to know much about horses.

The school-house and teacher’s residence, lately eirccted and tastefully painted, on the Whenuakura Educational Reserve, forms quite a pleasing contrast to the generally dull look of that part of the country. The contract has been satisfactorily executed by Messrs Holtham ami Warren. The schoolhouse and teacher’s residence arc of the same design and size as those erected by the Patea Education Board at Kakaramca. It is intended to fence-in about three and a-half acres of the land, which will serve as playground, and* for other purposes, A dividing fence will be erected between the school, grounds and that* portion allotted to the teacher’s residence. The Education Board i s deserving of every praise for the steady and systematic manner in which they appear to transact business, and for the amount, of useful and necessary Work which they have already performed. The schools, so far, are a credit to the district, and are reported to be well officered, and thoroughly well equipped in Educational appliances, Carlyle school will shortly be enlarged. A new school is being erected -at Normanby ; a teacher’s residence is to be erected at Manutahi; and other additions and improvements to teacher’s residences and school-grounds in various parts of the district, arc contemplated, upon completion of which Patea may be considered as in a good position as regards Educational requirements.
