[Pint Press Agexcv.] B| GHEYMOUTH. May 1 On Monday the prospects of the new rush on the north bank of the Terangaliau were reported as improving. Eigl t claims hail been bottomed on good gold, and the supposed line of lead was pegged oil' for nearly a mile. Should the shafts bottomed this week strike gold, there will be a largo rush. About 800 people are on the ground. The Kumaraaud Greymouth tramway Company commences running tomorrow. HOKITIKA. May 1. Great interest was taken in the election for the General Assembly to-day. The total returns from lioss, Woodstock, Donoghan’s and Hodmans, show a majority of twouty-om; in favour of Gisborne. Ilelurns from further South are not yet to hand, but they cannot .possibly ullbet the result. Gisborne’s return may be looked upon as certain.
The New Zealand Gazette contains tables which shew that the Customs revenue for the Colony for the quarter ending March last was £298,U39 as against £317,744 collected during the corresponding quarter ol‘ 1870, the decrease on the quarter being £19,705. The revenue for Auckland last •quarter was £49,119, showing a decrease on the corresponding quarter of £4,051 ; for Wellington £44,880, showing an increase of £3,735 ; for Lyttelton £49,570, showing an increase of £1,322 ; for •Dunedin £B4,G )0, showing a decrease of £15,218 ; for Napier, £10,035, showing an increase of £329 ; for Nelson £8,802, showing a decrease of £3,115 ; for Grey month £0,203, showing an increase of £1,241 ; for Hokitika £8,158, showing an increase of £1,727.
