COUNTY "JOBS."
(TO THE EDITOR OF THE PATEA MAIL.) Sir —On reading Mr Middlemas’s letter in to-day’s issue of the Mail I was rather struck, though not astonished, at the statement therein made, that Mr Sherwood had used his influence to get the late Foreman of Works to—vulgarly speaking —“ stick it on” within the town boundaries. On looking back to the report I find that when Mr Iloneyfield proposed a clearly defined amount of work to be done in the town, on the vote being taken the sides wore equal, when Mr Sherwood—the Chairman I should say—voted against, doubtless thinking it would not entail, sufficient expenditure : and what followed ? Why, the Chairman at once proposed an entirely undefined amount of work, which was agreed to by a large majority of the council, the consequence being, that instead of expending some £7O or £BO the contract is now’ let at £l7O. There is another little matter which I have noticed on re-perusal of the report. The Chairman stated that when in Wellington he sugsuggested to the Government the advisability of selling the old Buildings now used for Hospital purposes, with the view of erecting suitable Hospital Buildings. Is this another “ job” ? It looks very much like it at any rate. I have yet to learn that the present accommodation is inadequate for present requirements and earnestly hope it may still be so for a long future.—l am &o. CRITIC. April 25th. 1877.
