COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Patea Council was held at the Council Chambers, on Wednesday, the 18th April, at -half-past ten o’clock, when there were present Messrs G. F. Sherwood (in the chair), lloneyficld, Kells, Kenah, Middlcmas, Winks, and Bridge. A letter was road from Mr Livingstone, stating that, on account of ill-health, he was unable to attend. The Clerk road the authority convening the meeting, after which the Chairman read a letter from Mr Joyce, tendering his resignation as Foreman of Works. Proposed by Mr Kenah, seconded by Mr Winks, “ That the resignation of Mr Joyce, as Foreman of Works, be accepted.” Four tenders for the office of Foreman, which had been received, were laid before the meeting. On the motion of Mr Kenah, seconded by Mr Kells, it was resolved that Mr W. C. Wright’s application be accepted, at a salary of £156 10s per annum. The particular business for which the meeting had been called being concluded, an adjournment took place.

At eleven o’clock the Chairman took Ids seat, in accordance with resolution passed at last ordinary meeting, that, at the abovenamed hour a special meeting of the Council should be held to receive gravelling tenders and replies from surgeons. There were present Messrs G. F. Sherwood (in the chair), Bridge, Dale, Honeylield, Kells, Kenah, Middlemas, and Winks. Tenders for the various works called for by the Council were laid on the table, after which an adjournment took place till two o’clock.

On the Council reassembling, it was proposed by Mr Bridge, seconded by Mr Honeyfield, and carried, “That Mr D. Hughes’ tender, for No. 1 contract, be accepted.” Proposed by Mr Middleman, seconded by Mr Honeyfield, and carried, “ That Mr Delamorc’s tender, for No. 2 contract, be accepted.” Proposed by Mr Kells, seconded by Mr Middleman, “‘That Mr J. Hughes’ tender, for contracts Nos. 5, Gj -7, and 8, be acc<*pticl.” Carried. Mr Dale moved, “ That Mr J. Hughes’ tender for contracts Nos. 0 and 7, be accepted, and that the time for receiving tenders for contracts No. 5 and 8, be extended until next meeting of the Council.” The following votes were recorded :- Ayes— Mfessrs Bridge, Dale, Honeyfield. and Winks. Noes Messrs Kells, Kenah, Middlemas, and Sherwood. The Chairman gave his vote with the noes, and the motion was lost. Moved by Mr Honeyfield, seconded by Mr Bridge, and carried, “Tuat Mr J. Paterson’s tender, for contract No. 9, be accepted.” On the motion of Mr Bridge, seconded by Mr Honeyfield, it was resolved, “ That before any contracts lor gravel, &c., are signed, the Chairman shall insert a clause in the specifications, witth the consent of the contractor, to the effect that the contractor shall make-good any damage he may' do to the gravelled road.” Tenders from surgeons were then opened, when Mr Kells moved, and Mr Middlemas seconded a proposition “That Dr Cole’s and Dr Warren’s letters lie on the table until next ordinary meeting.” An amendment was moved by Mr Dale, and seconded by Mr Kenah, “ That a surgeon be appointed at this meeting.” A division resulted as follows : Ayes— Messrs Bridge, Dale, Honeyfield, Kenah, and Sherwood. Noes—Messrs Kells, Middlcmas, and Winks. The amendment was therefore carried. On the- motion of Mr Bridge, seconded by Mr Sherwood, it was resolved, “ That Dr Warren be appointed surgeon to the hospital.” The meeting adjourned at 4 p.m.
