Pa tea may lake encouragement from the following item i'roin a Southern paper which says - Ae eminent engineer who formerly visited .Riverton, and appears to have (aval lavmnv.bly impressed with the natural advaniagvs fur making a deep and secure harbour with tint, little outlay, lias .■ >ct; at !y inspari('d ilu- progress made at Kak.mui, and communicated his opinion ia r letter In a resident in Riven ton as .follows: —“ There are two vessels in Kakanni Hm hour at present, and there is from U) to 20 feel; of water between the piers, whore hnt a tow weeks ago the contractor’s ilrays used to pass over the shingic. Ihe fact of the success at Kakanui, if known to the Riverton Harbour Board, 'might siimnlate them to urge the necessity lor a survey and report being made on Riverion, as I am of opinion great good could he effected there at small cost. I should mention that only six months elapsed from the commencement of the work until the opening of the harbour, where the 1 Lloyd s Herald ’ sailed in, she being the first vessel that entered after the month was oponeu. AVith such splendid success as at Kakanui, a simnnr though more hazardous worn to imdenakc than that required lor the Patea River, there should be no hesitation on the part of the Harbour Board as to at once commencing operations.
