TARANAKI CRICKET CLUB V. PATEA
[FROM TIIK TARAHAKI HERALD.] Tins match, which has been looked forward to for some time by our local knights of the willow, eventuated on Monday, April 2. The weather was exquisite, and all that could be desired. The ground, after the late rain, was in good condition, and it was expected that some tall scores would be made. Owing to the absence of Fitzpatrick, and the indisposition of Cleary, the great guns in howling, the local team was not so strong as it would otherwise have been. Tossing the coin gave choice of ifmings to the Captain of the Taranaki Club, who elected to take the field, aud sent his opponents in. Tennant and Cowan were sent to take possession of the creases for Patea; and the game commenced about eleven o’clock by Adam s bowling a maiden. Take started with a
wide in each of bis two first ovens, and six were placed to sundries before the' lirst wicket fell for 9, Thu third wicket was lowered for Id, when Helps took bis place at the wicket, and by a free stylo of play helped the score to 3o before lie was disposed of. C. Bayly also went into double ligucs, and put together 12 in a neat stylo. The remaining wickets dropped without much trouble, and the innings closed for GO, of which 22 came under the head of sundries. The visitors lost no time in getting into the hold, F. Bayly and Mason bonding to Atkinson and Harrison. The latter kept the field alive, and put on 18 before a shooter from Helps gave him his quietus. Tuke played nicely for 12, when Bayly found his weak spot. Seventy concluded the innings, being all made off the
bat but three. The visitors soon got through their second innings, which produced 47, leaving their opponents 38 runs to win. It was thought that this number would easily bo made, and the game was booked as a moral certainty for the Taranaki Club, but the glorious uncertainty of cricket wus manifested by the ridiculous total of 17 appearing on the board when the last wicket fell. Buteu thus winning the match by 20 runs. Their fielding in the second innings was remarkably good. The bowling was also pretty hot; F. Bayly taking six wickets for three runs, and bowling eight maidens out of ten overs. The visitors certainly deserve groat credit for the pluck displayed finishing an uphill game, and are to congratulated on the manner in which they pulled off the match.
