The Carlyle Town Hall was well attended last night, to hear the Hon. W. Fox’s address on politics.

The Bishop of Wellington is expected in Carlyle within the next few days, and purposes holding a confirmation in St. George’s Church, on Wednesday evening next.

The annual meeting of the Patea District Baud and Building Society will be held at the office of the society on Tuesday evening next, when the report and balance sheet will be laid before the shareholders. We learn that the profit made per share during the year amounts to 12s.

The Wanganui Chronicle, of the Gtli instant, says ; —“ Scab infection at Manutahi is causing much commotion. Mr Hickson has been ordered olf to take the necessary steps to deal with the matter? and arrest the spread of the disease among the at present uninfected flocks. The following is the result of the second days Taranaki races, as published in the Chronicle ;—“ Hurdle ’Race —Perfume finished first, beating Gazelle by a half-neck, but the Judge gave the race to the latter ; Medora third. Gazelle led from the start, and no mistakes were made. Hack Hurdles Hurricane, 1; Billy, 2 ; M.P.C., 3. M.P.G got the stakes, as Hurricane went inside a post, and Billy jostled. Handicap—Opawa, 1 ; Elsa, 2 ; Resolution, 3. Jockey Club Handicap, of 130 sovs.; distance, 2 miles —Bide-a-wec, 1 ; Opawa, 2 ; Elsa, 3. Consolation—Ada, Bst, 1 ; Elsa, Bst Tibs, 2 ; May Moon, 7st lOlbs, 3. Forced Race —Resolution, Bst, 1 ; Flora McDonald, 7st lOlbs, 2 ; Mamama, Bst 21bs, 3, Hospital expenses, before being taken over by the County Council, totted up heavily. Accounts passed at the late meeting of the Council, disclosed charges amounting to between £l3O and £l5O for the past three months. With no money to credit it was a query how the charges would be met. The Chairman (Mr G. F. Sherwood) placed himself in communication with Government, and explained the state of affairs, and asked for aid. A telegram was received by him during the week with the gratifying intelligence that £l5O had boon placed to credit for hospital purposes. A telegram was also received by the same gentleman, last evening—the result of persistent effort on his part —from the Chief oflieer of the Treasury Department, stating that £2,042 4s, the proceeds of sale of land tor harbour purposes, had passed audit for payment. With such a substantial amount to credit, work should be quickly begun.

Our Ilawera correspondent writes, under date April 4th, regarding the survey parties, as follows • —“ One line of survey (that under Mr Finnerty’s care) has been allowed to go on. The other is still “ stuck.” I hear Captain Wilson has returned from Finnerty’s line. The natives argue thus . That it is not right of the Government to take their land and not take some from the other side of the river (Waingongora), viz. : Wannate Plains, because the Maoris now living on the plains were more hostile towards the Government in the war time than those whose land is now being surveyed. They say that the Government have already got most of their most valuable ( open) land : this seems their chief objection. The survey, still stopped, is only about nvo miles from Hawera.”

At the P.M. Court, Carlyle, before Cnpt Wray, on Wednesday last, Mr Bell- was fined 20s or in default to be locked up 48 hours. The Bell rang to the 48 hour time Archer Charles Croft, Esq., has been gazetted Public Vaccinator for Patea unde l the provisions of ‘‘ The Public Health Act, 187 G.”

Ilawcra is to have another Banking establishment. An agency of the Bank of New Zealand will be opened there on or about the 9th instant.

The Kev T. G. Hammond, Wesleyan Minister, lately stationed at New Plymouth, and who preached his farewell sermon there on Sunday last, will be passing through Carlyle, on his way to the Manawain district, to which he was appointed at last meeting of Conference. The rev. gentleman will preach at Normanby, at 11 a.m.; at Hawera, at 2.80 p.m.; and at the Carlyle Wesleyan Church, at G.BO p.m.

The mail steamer ‘City of Sydney ’ arrived in Auckland with the English Mail on the 2nd Apiil, having arrived at Honolulu on the 12th March. While in Honolulu Harbour the low pressure engine was disabled, which caused her detention till the 14th. Unable to repair there, she came on under one high pr° ssurc ongiuc and averaged nine knots. The steamer will repair in Sydney. '

As showing the attention which this district is attracting from outsiders wc may mention that Mr I?. McCarthy received a letter from a countryman (judging by the name) from an out of the way place in the South Island, at the beginning of the week, enquiring about land and the prospects for settling down on clear or improved land, by a person possessing about Tl ,000. The writer is quite unknown to Mr McCarthy, but was induced to write through seeing an advertisement in an old copy of the Patea Mail, and from having beard so much of the famed fertility of the district.

The Hon. William Fox, M.H.R., arrived at Carlyle by coach yesterday. He addressed bis constituents at Waverley on Wednesday evening, the meeting being well attended. On Thursday evening, Mr Fox lectured on Temperance at the same place, to a large and enthusiastic audience At the conclusion of the lecture, a number of ladies and gentlemen joined the teetotal cause. The meeting - , in results, is spoken of as one of the most successful over held in the district. To-night tne lion, gentleman will give a Temperance address in the Town Hall, Carlyle, commencing at half-past seven o’clock. Such a talented and eloquent speaker is rarely met with, and we expect to see a large audience. The outgoing English Mail, via San Fnuifisco, having been delayed, a supplementary mail will ho made up in New Plymouth on Wednesday, the 11th instantLetters can, therefore, he posted in Carlyle up to 1.4 A p.m. on Monday, the 9th inst., which will he forwarded by coach to New Plymouth, reaching there on Tuesday evening.
