WANGANUI RACES.

SECOND DAY. The weather both days of the Wanganui Races was most suitable. Rain foil each night preceding the races, the days being fine, with fresh breeze. It is estimated that 1,500 people were, present on the second day. General satisfaction was expressed at the manner in which the Jockey Club canned out its arrangements. The Chronicle says : —The second day’s races was a series of surprises, resulting doubtless, in not a lev/ cases, in heavy pecuniary disappointments.—The Hurdle Race was a great boil over, nothing but Perfume being fancied, unless at very long odds. The favourite fell twice, but was outpaced from the start, and could not rise to her fences, Waivarupa went beautifully, and made the running throughout, winning by several lengths. Gazelle and Medora also wont straight on this occasion, never refusing a jump.—The Hack Hurdles was also a hod over, Straight Tip and Violet being hot favourites, while Cossack, the winner, was never mentioned.—A grander race than the Handicap never was witnessed in Wanganui, nor possibly, indeed, on any racecourse in the Colony. Three cheers were given for Mr Hately, the hamlicapper, at the. close of the race. Twelve horses started, and nine of them finished within a space of from fifteen to twenty yards, the other three being very close, one of the number having broken down. From start to finish the race was fust, May Moon making the pace.— The Maiden was a boil over for Ouida, as Te Wbetu Marama (or the “Shining Star’) and Cripple Kate were hot favourites. We fancy too much was made of the former in the last half mile, but Ouida came away and won by two

lengths.—The Consolation was ano 1 hm good struggle, Ada winning by a short head fiom Parawhennn. llUßnwi I'ACK, of ;£GO : over eight jumps 3 feet 0 inches high. Two and a quarter miles.
