The Patea Mail. PUBLISHED WEDNESDAYS AND SATURDAYS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1877.
The A.C. horses, which were not wanted after the reduction of the Force, were sold by Mr Co worn, at Ilawera, on Thursday last, when good prices were realised. By a private telegram received yesterday, we loam that Major Atkinson has returned to Wellington, but that ho will visit this district as soon as possible. Tun Ann Enoland Eleven. —The following telegram, which speaks for itself, has been forwarded to Mr Bennett, agent for the All England Eleven u Upon what terms would your Cricketers stay an afternoon for little practice, as they travel through to Taranaki ; will forward them to Ilawera in evening if necessary. —Samuel TapUu, Secretary, Patoa Cricket Club. Mr T. Qninlivan, (late proprietor of the Egmont Hotel) Ilawera, is suffering from u severe illness, and it has been found necessary to call in no less than three medical men, viz., Drs. Musscn, Croft, and Walker. Assistant Surgeon Walker, of the A.C. Force, who was under orders to proceed to Taupo, has received instructions ( o remain in Patoa until the arrival of Major Atkinson. Many of his patients will be glad to hear this.
For some time past, groat inconvenience lias been felt, owing to the jurisdiction of the R. M. Court hero being limited to £2O. We understand that when Major Atkinson arrives in the district, a deputation will wait on him to try and get the jurisdiction of the Court extended to £SO. We would call attention to an .advertisement in another column, announcing- that Madame Fritz Carl’s Bijou Troupe will give a performance in the Town Hall on Monday night. By the criticisms of other journals, wo should imagine that the entertainment will bo a very attractive one, and this being the first company of the kind that has visited our town for a considerable time, it will no doubt be well patronised. We understand that the Troupe play in Hawera to-night, and come on here on Monday.
An advertisement appears in another column, calling a meeting for this afternoon, in the Town Hall. The object of the meeting is to ascertain the opinion of ratepayers with refer tice to the proposed salaries of the chairman ami clerk to the Comity Council. We understand that other business will also be biought forward and dismissed. Wo believe it is the intention of the Amateur Variety Troup.; to give another entertainment shortly, and judging Irom the pi'iigriiimiir, which we have kindly been shown, it will no doubt prove a success. A Subscription Ball is to be held at (he Town Hall, Carlyle, on the evening of Tuesday next, the Gth instant, when a largo attendance is expected. We are glad to say that Mr Derrett. jinm who had his leg broken is doing we 1 .!, and the log is not likely to be amputated, as was once anticipated. From the '• Government Gazette ” wc see that another valuable addition has been made to the town endowments. By the acquirement of these reserves the revenue of the town will be largely increased, so much so | indeed, that a very small rale should, in the future sulHee. and it is to be hoped that the Town Board will lake the circumstance into its consideration. When the rents from these reserves begins to come in, the Board will be in a position to carry out many important works. The thanks of the ratepayers are due to the Board for (lie efforts it has made to secure these endowments, as no doubt considerable (rouble has been taken in (he matter. Xo time should bo lost in utilising these valuable properties. We understand that the Grown grant for the lands recently 1 cared by tac Hoard nave all been foi-wardcd to Wellington, to receive the Governors signature. In the It. M. Court yesterday, before 0. A. Wray, Esq., R. M., ?.fr Lylfle sued ins employer (Mr Cattermoore) for £1 os, for wages. From the evidence given it appears that the plaintiff had hired horses from Mr Erskino and Air Graham, and had given ~his employer (the defendant) authority to liquidate the debt, and to deduct the same out of his wages. This the defendant did, Rut the Bench were of the opinion that this was not a correct way of settling wages, so gave judgment for the amount claimed, with costs, 10. The Patea County Council will meet in the Court-house, on Tuesday next, when the piiucipal business will be (ho election ol a clerk. Yvc believe there arc a large number of applications, and wc trust to see a good selection made: The Secretary of the Patea Cricket Club has been requested by the A.I!-England Match Committee, at Wanganui, to invite Messrs. .Jacomb and P.iddiford to represent Patea in the coming match, to he played at Wanganui on the Bth, JHh, and 10!h of this month. In the event of one or both of those gentlemen being unable to play, (he following gentlemen are to be asked in the order named—Mess, s Fraser, Belch, lidos, Bayly.
