The Harbor Board Revenue for the year ending 31st Dec. last, was £l4-, 594 ; exdenditnre, £7,647 ; present liabilities for work going on amount to £IS,SGS ; besides tlio proposed Dredging Contract of Froudfoot, £89,250. OAM ABU. February 2nd. The weather is so intensely hot, that harvest hands are working- at night. There is a deadlock between the Mayor and Borough Councils. At a special meeting to consider the conduct of the Mayor, in giving orders to the engineer, contrary to the resolution of the Council, a scandalous scene ensued. No business could be done, as the Mayor left the chair, but would not leave the room, and as lie was not absent, the Council could not elect one of their number to iill the chair. The Council sat up till Indf-past twelve, disputing, quarrelling, and chaffing ; they then all left the room, leaving the Mayor alone with the town clerk. Customs Revenue for month of Jan--uary is £1,090, as against £2,G00 last year. The trade of the Port is declining alarmingly. Business of all sorts very dull.
Money is extremely tight, Canterbury land sales are keeping up wonderfully. Receipts for the month are £41,521, or afc the rate of over half a million a year. "AUCKLAND. January 30. February 1. Curtin, who is under sentence of death, is beginning to manifest concern. The scaffold is being erected in the precincts of the gaol. Yesterday, Curtin sent for a reporter and made a long statement, alleging that he fought Shanaghau with a stick, and that when he tied Shauaghan up he did not think the injuries were so serious.
At the Supremo Court to day, MeFarlano was appointed Receiver in the estate of McArthur, Shorn and Co. The affidavits of Larkins and Durham, on behalf of W. and A. McArthur, affirm that the estate is indebted to McArthur £90,000, and when wound up will leave a deficiency of £12,000. The appointment of Deceiver is on the motion of Shera to have the estate wound .up in conserpieucc of the expiration of partnership. William Dose has been committed for trial on three charges of obtaining goods under false pretences, and falsely representing himself as agent for John Gibson, of Patoa. February 2nd. Mr Buckhmd reports: Fat cattle average 2Gs per 1001b ; lat sheep, to 3d. Curtin’s execution is fixed for Tuesday. Wrights report of City Account seriously impugns the efficiency of the City Treasurer, TIM AMU. January 30. The railway is to bo opened through to Oamam on Thursday. 180 miles will be opened uninterruptedly. Harvesting is going on busily ; the crops are very heavy, and labour is plentiful. DUNEDIN. January 30. In the case of Robertson v Ross, the jury, after being locked up nearly five hoars, brought in a verdict for the
defendant. The verdict of three-fourths of the jury was taken, under the Act passed last session, as the jury were not unanimous on all issues, but were unanimous on the point that were not likely to agree as a whole on all the questions involved in the case. A cowardly attack was made last night on the. Artillery Band near the corner of King and Union streets. As the hand were playing and leading the battalion, they wore assailed by a volley of stones. Bergt. R. Hogg, of the baud, was seriously hurt, Ids nose having been broken, and several members of the hand were struck—one on the back of the head. Several were saved by their instruments, winch were more or less damaged. No one could tell whence the missiles came. The City Council now invite designs for new municipal buildings, to be erected on a site fronting the Octagon and Moray Place. The designs arc to he so prepared that when all completed and different parts of the building erected they shall form a complete and uniform whole, at a cost of £30,000. BALCLUTHA. February 1. The inhabitants of Balclutha were startled this morning to read in the Dunedin papers a report of a sale by the Government in Dunedin yesterday, of one hundred acres of laud in the township of Balclutha. Not one individual hen? knew of the sale, in consequence of the advertisement appearing only in the Gazette. It is reported here that the Government have lost as much revenue by this one sale as would pay advertising in the district for many years. o AUSTRALIAN. SYDNEY. January 30. Another girl of the Holden family died on Saturday. The rest of the patients are convalescent. January 30. Another death from smallpox has occurred at the quarantine station. BRISBANE. January 81. The London wool sales, which closed on the 3rd December, will be long remembered by the trade, owing to the rapid and enormous advance in prices. All sorts closed at die highest quotations, and with a firm tone. There is every indication that the .consumption will be on a large scale.
