jr is anything hut satisfactory that, though the end o!" January is approaching, the Patea Harbor Board, nut only has not in ‘t, hut its constitution us far as the Coveriiinenfcnonuno-js are concerned, has not yet boon notified. In the latest Gazette to hand it is notified that the Bluff Board .should meet on the ISth, and the Hokitika Board on the 15th inst., and surely the Patent Board might have been set in working order at the same time. If there is one place in the colony where the services of a Harbor Board were needed it is hero, and wo hope those who arc already members, viz., the Chairman of the County Council and Town Board, and the members elected by the latter body, will lose no time in starting on their functions. As wo have so frequently and earnestly pointed out the improvement, of the river entrance will bo thousands in the pockets of the settlers and general public, and bow so much apathy exists on the subject is something beyond our comprehension. The time of year is favorable, the money to do what is needed can easily he obtained, and delay under the circumstances is simply suicidal. It is supposed by practical men that the one groin recommended by Mr Carrutliers would maintain a good channel and its cost, is estimated at ndy £ TUOO. There would not he the slightest di.ficulty in raising so mueli for such n purpose, and, in the interests of the district it; is to be Imped, first that the present fragmentary Harbor Board will take stops to have itself fully constituted, and that in the second it will then commence the needed work forthwith.
