A correspondent writes : —“ What lias become of our tailor. Here lam in want of a new suit, and cannot get one made nearer than Wanganui. It is really a pity some enterprising tailor docs not open an establishment in this tosvn, for I am sure he would find it a good speculation. I only wish I could do anything in the line, [ would not let the chance slip."

pm the last two days a considerable number of natives have frequented this township, their purpose being the negotiation of a lease of a part of the Utouto block to Air Henson of Wheiiuakura,

Tenders are to ho at mice called fur, for gravelling the road to the Ivetomarae bash. This work will bo a boon to settlers and we have great pleasure in making the fact of its being undertaken public. AVe imdcrstan 1 that Mr James Southby has let his valuable farm near town, on lease to Air Richards, of Wanganui, and it should, under proper management, pay the lessee well.

Alujor Take, who now has command of the A.C. Force iu the district, arrived to lake it over on Alonday last and it was handed over accordingly. lie will not, as we stated in a previous issue, have a very large body of men to superintend, owing to the late very large rediieli m. All constables lately stationed here will be located at Waihi iu future, with the exception of two kept here tor township duly.

A special meeting of the Town Hoard was held on Alonday evening last, all the members being present. The only business was to deal with the Assessment, roll tor the present year, which was submitted by Air Aitchson, the valuer lately appointed. It was resolved, on the motion oi: Air Alilroy. seconded by Air Hirst, that the list lie open for inspection, and notilicatiou to that effect be given in the Patka Mail. Some complaint was made that the price of printing notices required had not been given by the proprietors of that paper, as required, hut its icprosailtativo present explained that it was an oversight, and that nothing' niorj than I 'air ami usual charges would be made fur any work that might be given to the ol'liec. This explanation was accepted, and the IDard then adjourned.

A very interesting cricket match was played last Saturday, between the Star Ciub and the I’alea Club. The funner are only youths, some of them mere boys, and Cue Palca Club (herefore agreed to play with pick-handles against their younger opponent's bats. The Jir.st innings of the Club closed for‘2o, the Holding and bowling of the youths being specially good. The first innings of the “ Stars" only realised 21, the bowling of Messrs I’nisei and Fetch, being dreadfully destructive to their wickets. The second innings of the Club amounted to 22, thus leaving the youths 2-1 to win. Unfortunately very heavy rain set, in, and, though it was endured fur a length of time, in the hope that it might prove a shower only, eventually it was too great for the most ardent cricketer to stand and wickets were drawn without the match coming to a conclusion. In the first innings, Mr Taplin, with a piek-handie scored eleven. Had the weather been more favorable a large attendance would probably have boon present, the match being a most amusing one. We understand that the .Stars” have challenged the Patoa Club to play them level with bats, only barring three of the best players of the latter body. Whether the match will come off remains to bo seen.

A rather serious hitch occurred at the last meeting - of {ho Patoa West Road Board, -which took place on Saturday last. It appears that at the last meeting of that body a resolution was passed whereby the chairman, (Mr 11. S. Peacock') was deprived of his ordinary vote, ami was only to be allowed to exorcise a casting vote in case of equality. This the chairman resisted, and an appeal was made to New Plymouth, when it was found that the Board had no power to interfere with the Chairman’s vote. When the next'meeting took place the chairman raised the point that the minutes should not be confirmed until it was definitely settled. After consuming the whole afternoon in discussing the question, which was ultimately decided in favor of the chairman, the business concluded.

Parents should bo very careful lioav they allow their children to stray away from homo, as there is no tolling what danger they may get into. For instance on Monday last, a lot of children, the oldest of which could not bo more than eight years of age, wore amusing themselves with a sjwing-cart, opposite to Mr J. Whelans dwelling, when one of Mr J. Whelan’s little hoys got his log caught, by which he got a severe cut on the leg, the only Avondcr being that his leg was not broken.

It is reported that Messrs. Jacombo Riddiford, and Mason, have been invited to take part in the All-England Match at Wanganui, and Mr 11. Jenkins left hero yesterday morning, for Hawera, to ask them if they would undertake the duty. It is said, that, owing to the streets in the township of Nomianby not having been transferred to any local body, that a lien lias been made upon them. This will be a very unfair thing to those parties who have purchased sections ■which do not front the main street—for if such is the case, aad the streets are sold, they will have no way of getting to their purchases. Surely some Act should be passed, to prevent a landholder from cutting up a section into town allotments, and then selling it before the streets have been made over, or the township regis tered.

A pair of boots wore found on Sunday 1 ist, opposite Mr OJgers hotel. It appears lh-.d they belonged to a knight of the last, who had been taking a drop more than was good for him. and in consequence went to bed in the road. Some person or persons fond of a joke, thought this a good opportunity to play one, and therefore took the unfortunate sleeper’s bools oil:, and allowed him to go home without them, much to his annoyance. The sale of-lhe Normanhy sections, so long advertised, look place yesterday, there being a very meagre attendance, ami we noticed an evident determination to obtain them at the lowest possible prices ; however, those sections situated in good positions, maintained what appeared to us very good rates. An addition is now being made to the Telegraph Office here. It consists in the end of the verandah on the South side of the building being covered in, so that the public may have greater convenience when writing telegrams. The improvement does not increase the appearance of the building, but will be a great convenience to the public. The Tatea West Road B janl roll is still missing from the Court House. It is the intention of some of the ratepayers to resist payment on account of alleged illegality on this ground, it having been absent since a day or two before the election. It is stated that the New Testament Revision Committee have struck out the last seven verses of the Gospel of: St. Mark, the authenticity of which lias long been disputed.
