The Wellington Districts Highway Board have hit upon a way of evading that provision of the Haling Act which requires that every ratepayer shall receive notice of the valuation. The clause contains a proviso “that (he omitting to give such notice shall not invalidate airy such valuation and therefore the Board have decided to save the expense of postage, which Would have exceeded TlO, and give no notice.
It is with great regret, says the Hawke's / j (iij Humid, that wc have to record the death, at the early age of twenty years, of Mr Octavius lladlield, second surviving son of the Bishop of Wellington, and accountant in the .Napier branch of the National Bank. American journals criticise everything with a pretty free pen. Even matters of religion are often treated of. lightly or in language approaching levity. One journal thus mildly remarks on the missionary work amongst the Ciiine.se of San Francisco ; “The Bern John Hemphill, a worthy laborer for the Gospel, will have what earnest laborers like—a good, long, steady job—in fanning into even a moderate flame the spark of Christian feeling which he hopefully thinks is latent in the Chinese heart.’'
