The Armed Constabulary and Police Forces throughout the colony are to be amalgamated, so far as to enable the Government to use the Police of both islands, with the Constabulary in case of emergency. By this arrangement the Government can reduce the Constabulary by thirteen officers and two hundred men, and this reduction is being made as rapidly as possible. The whole question of administration of this combined force and appointment of superior officers is still under the consideration of the Government. The contract for the construction of the Wellington street tramways has been signed, and locomotives, carriages, and rails are ordered from England. Work will begin to-day.
