HAWERA SPORTS.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The great event of Christinas tide—the atheletic sports —came off on New Year’s Day. The scene of the sports was a paddock adjoining the main road, belonging to Mr J. Winks, who gave the ground free of charge to the committee. The weather was all that could be desired, and the proceedings passed off with the greatest satisfaction. For the 100 yards race, G. Bayly was first, and W. Williams second. Byrne and Te Bongo also ran. Time, llisecs. Hop, Step, & Jump —W. Minnix (native), Ist ;Te Bongo (native), 2nd. Distance, 39ft. 2in. Quarter-mile Handicap. —W. Williams (scratch), Ist ; G. Bayly (scratch), 2nd. J. Harrison, 7 yards, and B. Gangster, 5 yards, also ran. In this event the first two competitors in the 100 yards reversed places, Bayly being beaten in the longer distance. A protest was entered by one of the losing competitors for jostling, but it was subsequently withdrawn. Time, 75secs. 150 Yards Boys’Bace. —Minnix (native), Ist; Middiemas, 2nd. A number of other yonmrsters also ran. Vaulting with Pole —Curtis (B£t. 2,jin.), Ist ; Napoleon (native), 2nd. Te Bongo and Cowan also entered.

Mile Handicap —H. Jenkins (scratch), Ist ; G. Julian (scratch), 2nd ; Crowhurst (25 yards), 3rd. B. Dougherty (5 yards), and Harrison (25 yards), also ran. Much interest was displa3 T ed towards the finish of this event, as Julian (a Taranaki competitor) competed. However, he was compelled to give way to Jenkins, who finished up with a splendid spurt, and landed an easy winner by about 5 yards. Time, Smins 25secs. Throwing the Cricket Ball. —Helps (102 yards), 1 ; W. Adamson (02 yards), 2nd. Running High Jump. —William Minnix (native), 4ft. 10in., Ist ; Curtis, 4ft. 9in., 2nd, 220 Yards Flat Race. —W. Williams, Ist; G. Bayly, 2nd ; D. Williams, 3rd. Won by about 3 yards, after a well contested struggle. Running Long Jump. —Minnix (native), 18ft. 1 in., Ist; Byrne, 2nd. Half-mile Handicap. —H. Jenkins (5 yards), Ist ; Julian (10 yards), 2nd. W. Williams, scratch, McCoy,, 15 yards, and Dougherty, 15 yards, also ran. The two latter, however, fell out of the race before the finish, leaving the race to the remaning three competitors, Jenkins winning again although Julian tried all he knew to wrest first honors. Time, 2mins; 45sees. Mile Walking Match. —B. Corrigan, Ist ; Orchison, 0. Duigle and A’Court also entered. Orchison passed the winning post first, but was disqualified for breaking into a trot once or twice, and consequently fell to Corrigan. Time, 9mins. SOsecs. Three-legged Race. —Rongo and Minnix (natives), Ist ; Dougherty Brothers, 2nd. McCoy and Jenkins, Byrne and Orchison, and Sangster and Dingle also competed. Won with ease.

Putting Heavy Stone. —Johnston, 23ft. 4in., Ist ; Thomson, 2nd. Standing Long Jump. —D. Williams, 10ft. 2in., Ist; Curtis, 2nd. Johnston and Byrne also entered. This proved a gift to Williams, who beat the others easily. Quarter-mile Hurdle Race. —George Bayly, Ist ; Minnix, (native), 2nd. D. Williams, Crowhurst, W. Williams, McCo} r , Kuri-Kura, and Julian also ran. Ba3 r ly topped the hurdles in first-class style, and came in an easy winner, nevertheless, had not one or two competitors obtained a bad start and fallen out, the race would have proved of a more interesting nature. Tilting in the Ring. —For this event there were 24 entries. Mr W, Williams, sen, winning Ist prize (his horse being ridden l»3 r Mr J. Keys), who took 8 rings ; Mr Sutton winning 2nd prize with 7 rings.

Greasy Pig. —This event caused the usual merriment attendant on such affairs, and after an interesting chase and struggle, the pig was captured by Mr 8 Adamson

who subsequently let it go again, when another chase ensued ending in the animal’s capture by Mr Lynde, from Wanganui. This terminated the day’s proceedings. I regret to state that Mr Emanuel Bayley received a severe injury to his legduring the day through a horse (which was ridden by a Maori) coming in contact with the limb in question, but I trust that the injury may not prove of so serious a nature as might at first have been anticipated While on the subject of accidents I may mention that Mr (x. Bamford, and Mr Tree week, sen. have both met with accidents from falls from their horses. Mr Treeweek’s is the most serious case, he having had his collar bone broken, and also received severe internal injuries. Dr Walker (who is at present residing here) has been in constant attendance. Mr T. Lloyd opened his new hotel on New Year’s Day, and gathering from the hearty support which has already been accorded to him, I conclude, that he will do well in his new enterprise. The hotel will be finished, and everything put in order by the beginning of February. _ We are to have a new proprietor in the Egmont hotel shortly, as Mr Quinlivan has let his premises to Mr C. Brown of Wellington. Judging by bis previous experience in the latter city, I predict that he will do well by hia investment.
